Cozy well-placed hostel in Takayama. It's the newest addition to the Hida Murasaki hostel chain in Takayama, so you can use facilities in their other locations, too.
We stayed for two nights in February 2025. Check-in is done remotely via the screen at the entrance. After confirming your identity you gain access to the beds and must bring your bed tag upstairs (bring down upon checkout).
I found the beds super comfortable and warm. The capsules are well insulated and I slept very well both nights. I love the pillow, which is the kind you can fold/unfold to make it thinner or thicker. The capsule also comes with a small safe (must bring or buy your own lock), coat hangers, and a bath towel.
The main inconvenience is the narrow and rather steep stairs. It wasn't a problem for us, but I think it would be difficult with big luggage.
The main downstairs area has the toilet, showers (provides shampoo, conditioner, body wash), laundry machines (free to use but must bring/buy detergent), and a small kitchen (microwave, toaster oven, cups, glasses, plates, cutlery, a small shared bar fridge) and free coffee/tea. There's even a place where you can lock your luggage after checkout.
It is well-located, you need only cross the footbridge to get to the Miyagawa morning markets. It's close to many restaurants and parking lots, too. It's about a 15-20 minute walk from...
Read moreThe accommodation is located less than 10 minutes on foot from the city's main tourist attractions, so its location is more than convenient. The price of the beds in the shared rooms is also very good, although I imagine it varies depending on the season.
As for the facilities, they are very good. The beds are comfortable, and they provide you with clean sheets, a cover for the futon, a pillow, and a towel. You also have free shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner in the showers. If you want to visit one of the nearby onsens, there’s a machine at the accommodation where you can buy the ticket for 400 yen, along with a small basket containing shampoo and gel to take with you.
There is a washing machine and dryer (you’ll just need to buy detergent for 100 yen, which is more than reasonable), and a kitchen with a mini-fridge, toaster, cutlery, glasses, etc., to prepare a simple meal.
I should also mention that I made a mistake with my reservation and had to change my stay dates. Although I had problems with the booking app, the owners of the accommodation had no issues and helped me solve...
Read moreStayed here for 4 nights, the location is great and the hostel is clean. Rooms are decent, with the bunks having plenty of room. Bathrooms were clean and the showers were excellent.
However there is not much space to store luggage, and for some reason the lights stay on 24/7 in the dorm with no light switch to turn them off.
Can't help but feel the vibe of the hostel is a bit strange. A lot of CCTV cameras, staff aren't overly friendly (not helped by 90% of staff members being temporary).
Check in is done "remotely" which is actually just staff in the common room of the sister hostel 5 mins away. This means any guest who is in the common space can look at the big screen and see what people in the other hostels are doing. Surely this area should be closed off and the screens located in an office...
