I recently dined at a fantastic omakase sushi experience in this tiny but lovely restaurant, and the experience exceeded my expectations in every way. From the moment I entered, the ambiance was serene and inviting—low lighting, minimalist decor, and soft music created a calm and intimate atmosphere that set the perfect mood for the evening.
The highlight, of course, was the sushi itself. Each course was a work of art, with the chef selecting the finest seasonal fish and preparing it right in front of me. The attention to detail was remarkable, from the precise cuts of fish to the perfectly seasoned rice. Every bite was a burst of delicate, fresh flavors—the toro was incredibly buttery, the uni creamy and rich, and even the simpler fish like snapper and mackerel had their own distinct personalities.
What truly made the evening special, though, was the chef's engagement. Unlike some omakase experiences where communication might be limited, this chef spoke English fluently and was happy to chat throughout the meal. He explained each piece, sharing insights about the fish’s origins, and even offered some personal anecdotes about sushi-making. It made the experience feel personal and connected, and I learned a lot without it feeling like a lecture.
Overall, this omakase was not just a meal but an immersive, educational, and thoroughly enjoyable experience. The combination of outstanding sushi, a warm and engaging chef, and a beautifully tranquil atmosphere made for an unforgettable night. Highly recommend for sushi enthusiasts and those new to...
Read moreI had the pleasure of dining at Sushi Shin in April, and it was one of the most memorable omakase experiences I’ve ever had. The setting is intimate — only six seats — which creates a cozy, personal atmosphere where you can easily chat with Chef Shinji and other guests.
Chef Shinji is not only incredibly skilled, but also warm, funny, and very easy to talk to. He speaks fluent English, so there’s no language barrier if you want to ask questions or just enjoy a friendly conversation.
The meal started with some warm dishes — the steamed egg with snow crab and ikura was silky and luxurious, and the baby squid was perfectly tender. Then came the sushi, which was on another level. Each piece was cut with precision, with just the right fish-to-rice ratio. The seafood was incredibly fresh and clean-tasting, with no fishiness whatsoever. The white fish sushi was the best I’ve ever had (I believe it was turbot) — Chef Shinji ages the fish slightly to eliminate the usual chewiness and enhance the flavor.
If you’re a uni fan, you’ll be happy to know this omakase features several fantastic uni bites. And I can’t forget the rice — it’s seasoned with a special aged vinegar that gives it a mellow, complex flavor that balances sweet, salty, and tart perfectly. Truly the best sushi rice I’ve tasted.
If you’re looking for a unique, top-tier omakase that’s just a short trip from Shinjuku, I highly recommend Sushi Shin. It’s a special experience from...
Read moreI learned of Sushi Shin from Mikey Chens YouTube video and I made a reservation online from the link on Google Maps. Surprisingly when we got there it was a rare occurrence where it was only me and my fiancé dining for dinner that night so it felt like a intimate private dining experience for just the two of us. Chef Shinji worked in California and New York for many years before moving back to Tokyo and opening this restaurant, he speaks English as well so it’s tourist friendly. The interior of the restaurant seats 6 counter seats so it’s a small space without much decor, it’s just you and the chef working behind the counter as the main focus. The quality of the fish was good and Shinji uses what’s in season. The only small downside for our course is there was a lot of toro and uni in the meal maybe around 3 each? So I felt the meal was a little repetitive even though he prepared them in different ways I would’ve preferred to have more shellfish or fish that were not as common even though his preparation made the fish tender and flavorful. We had ordered the house sake multiple times to go with our meal and I think the sake tasted good for the price. We had good conversation with the chef and the meal was enjoyable. After dinner the alleyways light up and you can explore the surrounding neighborhood along with the yokocho near the...
