we were the only ones to dine on a Saturday night and was a bit hesitant, but it was a bit far from the busy area of Tokyo. this was the only curry restaurant we dined in but i didn’t want a typical Japanese style curry rice. i knew this would be unique and it absolutely did not disappoint. we got the omurice style curry with chicken katsu. as soon as we sat, we were served their onion soup, a good dashi! we drank it immediately, being a cold wet day and he was generous enough to refill our cups! the chef had prepared our meals quickly. he immediately fried up some onions with the rice (which had some sort of tomato base, it wasn’t tangy or anything). he topped the rice with a perfectly runny omelette, finished with the katsu and curry over the dish. the first bite exploded with flavours and we were so impressed and satisfied. i would say it’s more a peppery gravy like curry, than it isn’t a traditional Japanese curry dish. it’s not sweet, but savory and packed with umami, especially with some cheese melted in! the chicken katsu was hot and extra crispy *bonus that it didn’t get soggy at all throughout the meal. it was a generous portion and we finished every last grain of rice. we loved pairing bites with their complimentary picked veggies and spice rack! it was truly a fantastic meal. we’re sad we only made it here on our second last day, because we definitely would’ve came back a second time! the only feedback would be, the rice wasn’t steaming hot like the sauce/rest of the dish. some bites were warm rather than piping hot but it was balance out with the katsu .. just nitpicking. nonetheless, it was a delicious and memorable meal - we wished we had more time to come back for a second meal, hopefully next time!

We randomly found Kanda Koenji in January 2024. We were absolutely blown away by the curry. It wasn't traditional Japanese curry, it was more savory, dark, resembling more of a roux. The egg, the chicken, the rice, everything was perfect. The pickles that were available pair perfectly with the dish. We we're so excited to return this year and we're quite disappointed to find the the curry had changed. The Chicken Katsu and Egg dish is now served with a traditional Japanese curry and the pickles are no longer offered. :( The curry is good, the chicken is still perfectly crispy. The egg used to come with cheese but was still good. Overall it was a good meal, we just really wish they kept that other curry on the menu, it was great and unique.

Food: The food was absolutely AMAZING!!! I personally liked the Mushroom Hashed Beef the most! 10/10 food, would definitely recommend. Best omurice I've ever had!! Service: It was super hot and we were getting take out. They let us sit and gave us water!!! (However, we were the only ones there, so that may have had something to do with it)They weren't mean, but not super friendly either. They had a machine to order and you just gave them the tickets, and it was all in Japanese, so it might be difficult if you can't read Japanese. Atmosphere: It was great, but I think they only had counter seats? They might have had tables upstairs though.
