Was staying at Nakameguro when I chanced upon this restaurant by the corner. I didn't know much about the place, nor did the surprise I was about to experience. It seemed that there was only one person managing the place, and that by itself is already impressive.
I ordered the very basic course from the menu: For the appetizer, I was served with a plate of beef tongue, salmon, and I believe to be escargot with pesto sauce. It was my first time eating the latter, and its chewy texture and slight bitterness went along with the pesto sauce. I thought that was it, until I remembered I'd ordered a course, not just a plate. It was then I became excited of what dishes were to come.
Next dish was the potato soup, bread, and what seemed to be homemade butter due to its smooth flan-like consistency. This carb-filled dish reminded me of home back in the early 2000s.
I was served with the main dish next. My eyes lit up when I saw the colorful plate: beautiful slices of deer meat with what seemed to be red wine and pepper corn sauce drizzled on top, with a side of steamed vegetables. The meat was perfectly cooked and the sauce had a bright, peppery intense flavor. I couldn't resist shaking my head in disbelief. The man was just by himself.
Up next was creme-brûlée with a side of kiwi sorbet topped with a decoration of candied sugar and sliced strawberry. The feeling of cracking the sugar on top of the creme-brûlée doesn't get old. The sorbet had a citrusy taste and the candied sugar complemented it well.
Finally, I was served with tea. It was perfectly-heated and was a great signal to end the course. If I'm ever around the area again, I'd definitely try out the chef's special.
Upon payment, I was informed that everything I ate was homemade, including the butter. What a...
