Just Cafe — Restaurant in Utsunomiya

I have been eating at this cafe for about 5 years. The staff only speak Japanese, and it's a family run business. I think some of the bad reviews on here are unfair and given by people with some kind of condescending tone.

If you want a good portion for a decent price, get the lunch menu. All 4 dishes are good. If you don't care about the price, breakfast is not bad but I can see why some people might be left a bit unsatisfied for the portion size and price. Pancakes are the most filling for the price at breakfast. The croissant, ham&cheese bun are a bit small in portion compared to the pancake and salad. For the price, don't forget a drink is included so it's not bad at all. I always get the hot cafe latte.

Regarding how they run their business or customer service, I disagree. They are all lovely people and always serve me with a smile and show nothing but respect. Sure they have rules about what you can eat inside or outside, but if you can't speak to them in Japanese then don't get upset when they have a rule that you can't understand. The place is extremely clean and tidy, and usually busy. Maybe they don't want the crumbly muffins getting smeared into the chairs and all over the floor when they don't have a lot of staff for cleaning? I don't know, use your brain and have some respect especially if you're a foreigner who doesn't speak their language.

I really hope this recent increase in tourism and foreign visitors doesn't ruin this lovely area. Seriously a 1 star review because you couldn't eat your precious muffin at the table even though it's only on their takeout menu? Get a life. The self entitlement and tantrum for that is insane.

My experience wasn't a happy one. The young lady working there is all but welcoming. When you decide to open a place like a café you should be aware that you are dealing with people and for this reason you should like people in first place...The place is nice but welcoming is very important, for a foreigner even more. Also, I wanted to have a muffin with my coffee. The muffins were displayed near the entrance but when I ordered them I was told that they were only available for take-away. That was very disappointing! How awful it is when on a Sunday morning you look forward for breakfast and you can't have it . I had never seen such a thing. Fantastic little cafe, friendly staff and excellent quality fresh food. I love visiting the cafe on my trips to Utsunomiya. The menu is small but offers vegetarian options. Menu is in English and easy to communicate what you want. If you like fresh quality food this is worth a visit....
