The Farmhouse — Restaurant in Yamanouchi

Beautiful restaurant. I wish they were more service orientated. Just Trying to understand their point of view but we had a negative experience. We were told the restaurant was full (it wasn’t). Then they said we could come in after conversing in the back for a few minutes. Half the menu was unavailable including the daily specials, this could have been explained at the door instead of letting us in and then making us wait 20 minutes.

We had our car parked outside. The Hotel is next door and we can easily walk back. They asked our group who drove here. Then stated they Wouldn’t serve the driver a beer despite knowing we were within walking distance. I’m very confused. Perhaps this is a cultural misunderstanding but I get the feeling they just didn’t want to work or we had offended them in some way. This is my 8th trip to Japan and I’ve always had positive experiences with restaurants but I feel obliged to provide this feedback to the owner and other customers. I can't tell you how good it was to come in to this little place after trekking up and back to the snow monkey park in the cold, wind and snow. The service was super friendly right from the start, and they set us up in a little window seat with a heater and blankets. We both ordered the pork curry with rice and it was delicious, hearty, and exactly what we both needed after being out in the cold. The hot chocolate, hot apple and cinnamon wine, and New England IPAs were also stand out. Watching the snow falling out the big windows while being inside and rugged up and warm was so relaxing. Little bit off the main drag on the way to the snow monkeys, so it's easy to miss if you're not looking out for it. Definitely a worthwhile stop so make it part of your itinerary...

We were rushing for a bus and had to move a little quickly after our very tasty meal (oh the fried chicken) and small, though multiple beers. Got home and realized we hadn't received the take home bottle of saison and also a little unsure if we'd just forgotten it. Finally got a hold of them 5 days later after a couple tries, said my name and they pretty much recognized me immediately, apologized, said they'd ship it free of charge and even remembered where we live. That's good stuff send to match most of the reviews I read before and after.
