came here on my visit to Yokosuka. I thought from pictures, reviews, and the beer that it would be a good place. I was just very underwhelmed with everything. 4 people in my party and each dish came out one at a time with about a 30 minute wait in between them, so the first person done was waiting on the last person who didn't receve their food yet. 4 of their 8 beers were sold out. we ordered sold out so when we ordered the flight of 5 beers we needed a double a beer for over 2000 yen for it with "snack set" which was diffrent from photo I am guessing random side snacks. we got a few smoked peanuts (too much smoke). 2 slices of pressed ham (nasty), 2 smoked pork slices and 2 pieces of pickeled sweet potato, and a single cracker with raisin butter. (sadly, the cracker was the best thing) there were like 2 staff members, and they kept leaving, so it was hard to order drinks. I ordered a mango chu-hi, and it was too sweet. the things ordered were fish and chips, pulled pork sandwiches, hot chicken sandwiches, and tempura rice bowls. it came out in that order. we showed up at 6 pm, and the last dish came out at 7:40. the sandwiches etc weren't bad. the food was not. the fries were the best part they were great. pulled pork looked good but just tasted ok. The hot chicken sandwich was probably the best thing we tried.
They weren't packed. I usually don't mind waiting, but it took so long that I wanted to walk out. but when it is my kid who was served last, I didn't. I was going to ask to switch it for to-go when it came out. at this point, we sat around waiting for him to eat. he ended up eating some and then getting a to go box and taking the tempura and leaving the rice, hecause even he wanted to just go home at that point. Honestly, I wouldn't come back. I just didn't really understand why food was taking as long...
Read moreUpdate: Still great beer. The menu has changed and they have removed donburi and sashimi. I think that this is a mistake (that was my favorite food here). I encourage the owners to consider bringing back the fish options.
Yokosuka Beer’s owner is a genius. Placing a US-style craft brewery right outside a military base is a winning business plan. Fusing that with bit of Japanese-inspired beer and local food fare makes this five stars.
The beer is quite good. There really isn’t much more I can say about it. I particularly enjoyed the ones where they are taking a local ingredient and integrating it (like the ginger beer). For people visiting for the first time, I strongly recommend doing the tasting flight. It will help steer you in the right direction for your first follow-on pint.
Food-wise, their menu is a mix of Japanese and Western cuisine. During my several visits, I stuck strictly with the Japanese cuisine so I cannot comment on the quality of their Western offerings. The Japanese (sashimi) was good. It made a surprisingly good paring with their beer, and it made it that much more enjoyable of an experience.
Like most of Japan, English is not super common; however, some/most of the staff knows enough to be able to interact as needed. Staff is attentive, competent and friendly so no complaints here.
If you’re visiting Yokosuka and looking for a beer, I can strongly recommend this establishment for your patronage. You are unlikely to be...
Read moreGood luck getting in. My wife and I have tried to eat here on no fewer than nine occasions since they opened, and every time we go there is some reason why we are turned away. Once it was because Google said they were open, but they weren’t; good luck finding the hours posted anywhere. At least four times it was because they were “full”, which I suppose is a good problem to have, but I watched them turning away a LOT of business those nights - maybe find a bigger venue or open more locations, as the craft brew thing is clearly in high demand here. A couple of times we were given no explanation, just told “no food tonight” and we couldn’t figure out why (possibly due to language barrier, but they didn’t seem super concerned about spelling it out; some people were obviously eating upstairs).
Every single time we’ve tried to get seated and been turned away, it has been with a blasé attitude (at best) with distinct lack of concern for our trouble. This has been our first stop on a date night multiple times, with no success to show for it. And no, I’m really sorry that we didn’t want to sit on the improv seating in the basement (drinks only area) or stand in front of your brew machinery (it’s nice, but I suppose non-home-brewers are more likely to gawk) just to have a sip and walk away. We deserve better in a...
