I was suggested to check out Kuldīga by my Latvian buddy from Sigulda. I took the bus early in the morning. Took 3;27 minutes to get here. Then, my travel always points to local breweries. So, I checked this place out. Surprise! I'd say it was better than any fine dining places in Rīga. Everyone has his/her own taste of food. But, this one was a hidden gem. As a lot of Latvian loves sweet/dark amber lagers, these guys went for IPA or pilsner. The pilsener was on point. They also have some cocktails/cider on tap. I'd say their cider was closer to champagne or processo with extra flavors but still dry. I always go for dry and thick wine or dry champagne. Food wise, I've got smoked pork. It is not tender as Amdrican smoked pork ribs, but I am not a fan of slow smoked ground as you bite type of smoked pork. It's got texture, but it was still tender enough, which was my preference for the tenderness of the pork. Plus, they actually have LP vinyls playing John Denver (this part, I may be too American. I am Korean-American), Abba, and so on. I told my own Latvian buddy front Sugulda to check this place out. You won't be disappointed. This place is far best restaurant (Vibe plus food quality.) Now, I am thinking I'd ride on 3.5hr bus ride to Kuldīga from Rīga just to their food and drink. Smoked pork ribs + buttered cabbage + Duna Pilsner was a good pair! I...
Read moreVery hipster-looking place with a 4.7 rating, so expectations were high — but the experience was disappointing. At first, my order number flashed, I went to collect my food, but it wasn’t mine. Okay, mistakes happen. I kept waiting… almost 40 minutes later my number beeped again.
This time, I was given a chicken dish with coleslaw and mushroom sauce. The chicken was so salty it was literally inedible. My actual burger with fries was okay, but the beef was more well done than juicy — in a restaurant of this level, they should always ask how you want your burger cooked. And if it’s well done, then it should be properly well done, not just dry.
After returning the chicken and getting a refund, I wanted to say thank you when they took away the tray, but the staff member didn’t make eye contact or acknowledge me at all.
I don’t know how the other dishes are — maybe they’re great — but for a place with such a high rating, the wait time, wrong orders, lack of basic courtesy, and inconsistent quality don’t match the price. Maybe it’s time to have more than just two people working in the kitchen. Sometimes, overly hyped hipster spots simply don’t live up to...
Read moreThe atmosphere is great! The place is super cozy! However, the service could be better! The waitress was super nice- there’s no negative feedback for her personally, just a matter of staffing. She was all alone that night, when the place was packed! Consequently the drinks came way past us getting starters. We were a group of 8 people and my order was completely forgotten until reminded, after everyone else was served their food. Putting that aside the food was quite underwhelming. But!- don’t take my review as the reason not to visit the place! The atmosphere is great, the staff is good and maybe you will have better luck...
