📍Hudson's Deli, Penang (Non-Halal)
🥪Tucked quietly in suburb at Tanjung Bungah is perhaps the BEST-tasting Sandwich shop I've ever experienced. Christian, the Austrian Executive Chef of 5 star hotels around the world, serves the extreme best of his capabilities. The cuisine screams of a certain class; a mixture of simplicity with the best of imported ingredients, and a strong desire by a head chef to see to the satisfaction in his customers.
😋Being opened for the past 2 years, Hudson's Deli has been weathering the COVID-19 storm with success because of the steady stream of customers. From what initially was 50% expatriates and 50% locals, it would appear that the local numbers have overtaken the expatriates, because of what seems to be positive word of mouth reviews.
🌍Christian and his wife, Pearl both run the show; they're all smiles and pleasantries. Christian's repertoire is expansive.. He's been an executive chef and even holding the position of general manager in various 5-star hotels around the world - Austria, Hong Kong, Thailand, Australia, Malaysia, China and even the Philippines.
🍔Being in Penang with Pearl (who is a Kuchingite), Christian was on a witch-hunt for a satisfactory Reuben Sandwich; it was a futile attempt. This spurred the start of the lovely Hudson's Deli, the name Hudson being inspired by his grandson who was born in Australia just 2 years ago.
🍖It's no wonder that the 'Reuben' sandwich is sold 3x more than the other sandwiches. I can personally vouch for it. Filled with beef pastrami, sauerkraut, swiss cheese, cocktail dressing on rye, it is an explosion of a straightforward classy luxury for the tongue. I've been here twice, and twice I had the Reuben.
🧀Christian's concept of running the deli is simplicity; comfort food, simple, not too many staff and controllable. That being said, everything displayed and served is 95% imported from Italy; from the various kinds of cheeses to the salami and bruschetta, Christian clearly does not compromise when it comes to quality.
🍲We tried the pumpkin soup, goulash soup, grilled chicken meatloaf and grilled vegetable sandwich (perfect for vegetarians), and they were simply amazing. Have a look at the pictures for yourself!
🍰The Burnt Cheesecake, baked by Pearl, was incredulously rich; no flour used, just cheese, eggs and sugar. This too is a must-try.
I'm glad that Hudson's deli is just nearby where I stay. It's amazing food served in simplicity, something that I will go over and...
Read moreUpdate 2: My main reason to come back here is the Reuben sandwich. Have been to Hudson's a few times already and have only ever had the Reuben. Just the very best with a generous pastrami filling of high quality. My wife and daughter had the Roast Lamb wrap which they felt was delicious with the yoghurt dip. The Strawberry smoothie and Guava Soursop drink were well prepared. Excellent lunch with friends helped along with patient and friendly service. Please keep it up 😋⭐👌.
Update 1: The Reuben is still awesome and my favourite sandwich in Penang. The smoke turkey sandwich is still great and the goulash soup so comforting. The Key Lime pie was downed by a friend all alone so must have been good.
Our take-home gifts - pork sausages, chorizo and Milano salami 😋.
Need to come here more often.
Older review: My family and I went there a few days ago for lunch with a friend. It was a great experience both in terms of the food and service. We chose the Reuben sandwich, lamb wrap which was the special that day, smoke turkey sandwich. They were all good portions and very tasty. The juices were refreshing too, especially the watermelon drink. On our way out we even purchased some of the salami with pepper and the sausage which we consumed a few days later. Excellent quality. Hope to...
Read moreTucked away in an older shoplot in Tanjung Bungah and off the bustling mainroad, I may have come close to this place many times in the past without noticing it.
This deli serves the best Reuben sandwich in Penang. Packed with a generous amount of beef pastrami, sauerkraut and swiss cheese on toasted rye bread, the rich, beefy taste of the pastrami is balanced nicely with the tanginess of the sauerkraut and sweetness of the cocktail dressing. The rye bread was perfectly toasted, and was the perfect mechanism to deliver that medley of flavors into my mouth in each bite. The grilled chicken meatloaf was also good with a firm, smooth texture. The potato salad that accompanied it however, stole the show with what I believe to be relish mixed into it to give it that special tang; delicious when eaten together. Another wonderful thing to note is that they do have a fridge with a nice selection of IPAs; what better beverage is there to wash down a savory sandwich and meatloaf?
The environment is cosy with warm lighting, and decorations are playful with a few Kessler dog art pieces hanging on the wall. I also love that there are some well-fed stray cats outside the deli. I will definitely be back whenever I'm in the area for a...
