Not sure if there was a management change as it’s been awhile since we came back but we were introduced to the set lunch menu and the pizza menu so we decided to give it a try.

We asked the male server if drinks are included as both menus (pizza and lunch sets) were served together and he said yes. Later when we ordered, he said No. Short term memory loss, but that’s fine. Anyway their pork burger was a disappointment. The taste was meh and the size of the patty was tiny, maybe enough for four bites only. I loved the shoestring fries but they weren’t too generous with that either unfortunately.

The oven baked pizza was okay but not a speck of leoparding at the bottom, for those of you who are particular about such things.

We were really looking forward to coming back again and travelled a fair distance too.

However, based on the disappointing portion size, so-so taste, and barely there service (we overheard the lady gushing over the menus and telling another table that the set menu would be of a smaller size - why didn’t anyone mention that to us earlier?), we won’t be rushing back...

The staff was exceptionally friendly and welcoming, quickly noticing that it was our first visit. She kindly recommended a few dishes, which really helped us make our choices.

The pricing was reasonable, especially considering the generous portions. Everything here is homemade, including their sausages and mashed potatoes—no shortcuts with instant mash, which is a refreshing change. Even their vegetable salad is homegrown and available for purchase, adding a lovely farm-to-table touch.

I ordered the Bacon Aglio Olio, and I was delighted with how generous they were with the bacon. Every bite was packed with flavor! For dessert, I tried their tiramisu, which struck the perfect balance—not too heavy or too light, with just the right amount of sweetness.

While they have a few parking spots in front of the restaurant, these can fill up quickly during peak hours. I’d recommend parking a little further down the road in the nearby residential area if needed.

Overall, I absolutely loved dining here and will definitely be...

If you’re a fan of Italian cuisine and want a fine dining experience, look no further. We absolutely loved our dinner at The Hillside. The food was excellent and the atmosphere was truly amazing. The service was kind and friendly, and the Spaghetti Bolinas was the best I’ve ever had. The Hillside is a great place to visit for dinner with your friends and family, and we highly recommend it. The Hillside is now offering a mouthwatering selection of food, including their classic spaghetti Bolinas. From their classic Bolinas to their new Italian Pizzas, you won't want to miss their delicious food. The Hillside also offers a nice selection of wine and beer, which can be enjoyed while relaxing in their casual atmosphere. The Hillside is a great place to have dinner with friends and family. They have a comfortable dining room with attentive service. Their menu has something for everyone, from pizza to steaks. They also have a variety of other dishes, including salads, burgers,...

Now this is the “something different” type of cuisine in Penang, which is famous for street food like Char Kuay Teow, Assam Laksa, and Chendol. The Hillside came recommended on Google Maps for authentic Italian fare and this made us give the place a try and what a good choice we did! The Beef Bolognese and Carbonara Spaghetti were of a large portion that could be shared equally by the four of us (including two kids) but the best was the two pizzas. The Hillside Banger and Pepperoni pizzas were done the traditional way, in a wood-fire oven thus giving the “real” Italian taste. Not forgetting the attentive and courteous service by Mr. Kim and his team, and we even had a nice chat with the boss himself after the restaurant started closing for the night… Explains why The Hillside has been able to build a steady stream of regulars over the years (80% of their customers are Penang expats) and this kept them afloat during lockdown too!

It was tricky trying to decide what to eat at The Hillside, as they carry a rather extensive menu. They have both Eastern and Western selections; more of the latter, actually. We ended up sampling their famous woodfire pizza (delicious and hearty straight from the woodfire oven set up in the garden outside) and a grilled salad (lovely but a tad too overzealous with the oil dressing). Despite being dinner, we ordered a big breakfast meal (love it that they make their own sausages) and instead of dessert, we decided to have yogurt with granola from the breakfast menu. Everything was washed down with hot cups of coffee (forgot to take photo of the drinks oh well). The service was attentive and courteous. We also enjoyed the cosy and woody interior. The cafe certainly has a groovy UK vibe to it and even doubles up as an art gallery. Overall, we enjoyed our visit although we do feel that the price tags are a tad bit higher.
