Tried Hup Ka Restaurant for the first time after hearing so much about their famous claypot vermicelli with large river prawns and claypot fish—and it didn’t disappoint! Both dishes were delicious and even my parents thoroughly enjoyed the dinner.
They use high-quality Bentong ginger, which adds a rich aroma and depth of flavour to the dishes. The claypot prawn vermicelli comes in a savoury broth that’s best enjoyed hot—once it cools, the flavour isn’t quite the same. While the soup was very tasty, I personally felt it wasn’t great value for money, as the prawn meat was quite minimal despite the size.
The standout dish of the night was definitely the claypot fish. It was incredibly fragrant with generous strips of ginger and onions, and the fish itself was super fresh and fatty—so good that I ended up eating 1.5 bowls of rice with it!
The environment is basic, as it’s a typical non-air-conditioned restaurant, but the food more than makes up for it. Other dishes on the menu are more affordable, and I’ll definitely be coming back...
