The 2 meals my partner and I enjoyed at Makan Mana Ikan Bakar were 2 of the very best and most memorable meals we enjoyed during our stay on Langkawi and in Malaysia.
Makan Mara Ikan Bakar blew us away with its super fresh ingredients, its adventurous seasoning (while not overpowering the original flavour of the fresh produce) and with the fact that all the seafood & veggies/dishes were grilled, fried or steamed to perfection. We could select our own fish, squid and crab and even the way of cooking (stuffed squid? DE-LI-CIOUS! Grilled prawns? EPIC!). Although the choices are endless, the staff was super friendly and helpful in assisting with our selection, to make sure that we would enjoy our meals.
I could (and will, as matter of fact) go on about the skills of the entire family/team; the fish would fall of the bone at the slightest touch, while the steamed mixed vegetables had a rich flavour and were still offering a great bite. The fried egg of the nasi was spectacularly seared with a deep brown crust, while the yolk was still slightly runny. The fried calamari were simply the best and most crunchy I've ever tasted, and how cool that you could actually select the squids yourself. And that marinade... That marinade should be qualified as a hard drug because it is addictively good! Did I already mention that the family cooks as a well-oiled machine and managed to get all the food out at the same time? This was actually the first time we experienced this in Malaysia.
We originally came for the superb food, but we returned (and are definitely planning to come back) for the very welcoming and quality company of the family running the restaurant, who were nothing short of amazing and very welcoming hosts. We learned that the restaurant is quite young (4 months old), but with this level of cooking and welcoming vibe this restaurant will remain to be packed/crowded (full restaurant on both nights) as both locals and tourists seem to love Makan Mana Ikan Bakar.
I would highly recommend to eat here (do make sure you arrive with an empty stomach...) and to get to know the lovely family running the restaurant, both for foodies and for people who appreciate great, super fresh sea food and...

The sotong goreng tepung (fried flour squid) has the best ratio in terms of its squid and flour, so crunchy and the taste is the bomb!
The seafood is also really fresh and they have been in the business for 5 to 6 years. It's a family business, which means their quality is top notch despite the challenges of COVID last time.
They just moved to this large area quite recently from their old place next to the go kart area in another part of Langkawi.
Ordered, squid, 2 fishes, 2 pieces of tiger prawn, clams and vegetables. Will definitely come here again during my next visit of Langkawi in the foreseeable future.
Total of RM189 for 5 pax (2 adults, 3 kids). Worth every penny based on how great the food was. Even I saw a few foreigners (from Europe I presume) at 1 table who actually ate at the place as well, which shows its international...
Read moreA delightful find in Langkawi, I truly agree with another review that is it worthwhile to visit Langkawi just to have another taste of this seafood! Fresh (you pick the fish, prawns and squid on your own), tantalising grilled jenahak fish (BEST fish I ever tasted) and many ways to cook other fish like seabass (see menu in photo). Buttermilk prawns were chef's kiss. Have the squid in the fried calamari style - you won't regret. The cincalok and sambal were perfect accompaniments to the seafood. Teh tarik is the thai ice tea variety, which suited us well. Ask them what is the best way to have your chosen fish/seafood and they will gladly help. We came down for a second visit during our trip! A clean location to have your dinner. Take note of opening hours, and come earlier to pick...
