Papasan Canteen Kuchai is a hidden gem that delivers a truly unique dining experience with its creative and flavorful dishes. I had the opportunity to try several of their signature items, and each one was memorable in its own way, owner Zac and Jimmy is super friendly and nice, we felt like eating at home while chatting with them:
OMU Curry Rice with Crispy Chicken – A hearty dish with a beautifully fluffy omelette, rich and flavorful curry, and perfectly crispy chicken. The combination was comforting yet satisfying.
D24 Durian Carbonara (阿蓮姐) – As a durian lover, I was intrigued, and this dish did not disappoint! The creamy carbonara sauce infused with the bold, distinct aroma of D24 durian was unexpectedly delicious. A bold creation that works wonderfully for adventurous eaters.
Vegetarian Miso Udon (味噌烏冬湯面) – A light yet satisfying option with perfectly cooked udon in a flavorful miso broth. The balance of textures and the umami flavors made this dish comforting and nourishing.
Nanyang Amoi (南洋小妹) – Espresso with coconut milk was a pleasant surprise! The bold coffee notes were beautifully balanced with the creamy, tropical richness of coconut milk. A must-try for coffee lovers looking for something different.
Neighbor of Sicily (西西里的鄰居) – Iced shaken cold drip coffee with lemon and honey—this was refreshing and aromatic, with the tangy lemon and sweetness of honey perfectly complementing the smooth cold drip coffee.
Premium Uji Matcha with Passion (百香抹茶) – This drink had the perfect balance of earthy matcha and the tangy sweetness of passionfruit. A vibrant and energizing beverage!
Golden Tangerine (金桔汽泡) – A refreshing fizzy drink with the natural citrusy sweetness of golden tangerine. A perfect palate cleanser to enjoy with their bold-flavored dishes.
The ambiance of Papasan Canteen is cozy and welcoming, with a friendly team that makes the experience even better. Their menu is truly one-of-a-kind, blending traditional and modern flavors effortlessly. Highly recommended for anyone looking to explore innovative dishes and drinks in Kuchai Lama! I like the concept of sharing tables...

Ordered: Papasan Roll 红牌法国鹅肝明太卷 🦆 (RM27) Not your typical sushi because it is topped with foie gras - talking about fancy! ✨ you get to taste everything at once, which had a melt-in-the-mouth kind of texture.
Wasabi Tartar Chicken 哇沙比塔塔炸鸡 🍗 (RM18) What's interesting is that seaweed pieces are included in the batter! Wasabi tartar is not super spicy, but it might make you choke if you take big heaps of the sauce 🥵
Thai Miso Sashimi 泰多鱼 🍣 (RM30) Inspired by the Thai flavours, the whole dish provided a sour, spicy, and tantalising sensation! 🍋 Really loved the thick pieces of salmon.
Scallop Spicy Mapo Tofu Rice 小鲜肉豆腐饭 🌶️ (RM25) Looks spicy but tastes spicier than you think ‼️ If you are looking for something similar to mala without burning your tongue too much, then this one is for you! It's so satisfying and fulfilling 😋
ABC Potato Salad 薯泥沙拉 🥔 (RM18) Potato salad in ABC version? It may sound weird, but all the sweet ingredients really went so well together with savoury mashed potatoes! It's slightly peppery too.
Durian Carbonara 阿莲姐 🍝 (RM28) Comes with soft shell crab 🦀; still so crispy despite taking pics for almost half an hour! Thought the pasta would be cloying but the taste itself had our expectations reversed 🤩
Omu Curry Rice 3P 三块咖喱唐杨炸鸡蛋饭 🍛 (RM19) Meal is incomplete without the best thing in the menu - their iconic curry omurice! Huge fried chicken cutlets were the highlight; they were so succulent 🌟 portion is great for sharing as well. Certainly a must try!
Nanyang Amoi 南洋小妹子 (RM14) - espresso with coconut milk Iced Shaken Gorgeous Black 帅气冰摇黑咖啡 (RM18) - iced shaken double espresso with honey brown sugar Apple Oolong Sparkling Juice 苹果乌龙西打 (RM13) Highly recommend their drinks here!! 🫶 sweetness levels are just right.
Everything here was awesome; no surprise that this spot is highly rated by many! Check out their other outlets in Cheras and Sunway...

We're there a little early, almost immediately after they opened for business for the day. We got our table quite fast. A little later, the queue could build up.
Slightly different kind of experience. We're allowed 40 minutes to finish our lunch, that's understandable and acceptable. Not sure if this applies to off-peak hours. This however did made us felt a little rushed to finish our meal.
There were other rules that needed to be adhered to, I was reminded a couple of times, gently, to keep my mask on until food or drinks arrived. This made me feel that we were being watched, probably because we have not experienced it at other places, yet. My wife and I were a little uncomfortable with this. It maybe was necessary I think, but it should not be overdone or done with certain discretion. This is a skill that should come with time.
They were businesslike when pointing out the rules and regulations of the restaurant.
I kind of became a little paranoid and felt that I was being watched even when I was eating. My wife felt the same too. This could be another version of the new norm which need some getting used to.
Then, we were allowed only one order. We need to get what we need with this order. No additional order was allowed.
Overall, service was okay I would say. We didn't see any foreign workers.
Food was good enough. The portion of OMU Curry Rice was big enough for two small eaters. The five pieces of fried chicken looked small in the menu. The actual portions of chicken were really big. We had to place the fried chicken in separate bowls before eating. Taste was good enough, the curry was a little starchy though. This item came with a fried egg.
Unagi Egg on Rice was also good enough. Wished that the portion of Unagi was a little bigger.
Parking wasn't really an issue as we parked our car at the public parking area next to the Old Klang Road Wet Market. Parking fee was RM 3.00 per entry. We walked for about 150 meter to get to this eatery. The walk was fine as it wasn't raining or sunny.
Price was reasonable, overall.
This would be a viable option....
