It was a pleasing brunch with my parents once again. Visit Baba Charlie for the first time, and it met our expectations. Managed to get parking quite easily, and you'll never miss this bright yellow painted shop. Once we entered, we were immediately seated. The place is air conditioned, but probably my comment is the seating arrangement is quite congested and the arrangement of the furniture and displays was a bit chaotic. Movement was a bit restricted. They had a wide array of menu, and it's cool that they do have sets recommended based on the number of pax, it simplifies our choice and also gives us a chance to try more dishes. Minimum starts at RM100 for 4-5 pax. We picked set A which came with the following, and this is our honest opinion: 1) Asam Rebus Seafood - the soup was delicious, flavorful with hints of asam and daun limau purut. It was filled with seafood mainly prawns, slices of squid, crab sticks, and fish balls, it is really suitable for a rainy day 2) Cincalok Fried Omelette - I didn't really get the taste of cincalok from the omelette. I know it's supposed to be a prawny salty sort of taste, but it wasn't present. Just an average omelette. 3) Brinjal Udang Kering - this was yummy, the sambal was made nicely ("pecah minyak" as you can see in the pic), brinjal not over cooked and still holds its texture. We could taste the dried prawns in here, so it's as per the name. 4) Ponteh Chicken - it's a chicken style made like kicap style but it has a vinegary taste to it. Normally made with chicken, potatoes and sometimes it has buah keluak in it, but this one didn't. But it tasted average, I would say not much different from ordinary chicken kicap. We ordered Chinese Tea which costs RM1/glass. Nice to wash down the oiliness. Overall, the bill came to RM112 for 3ppl with some additional Nyonya kuih we bought. Their Nyonya kuihs are delicious, come in many varieties, must try.

Our recent visit to Malacca brought us to this popular Peranakan Kueh (Cake) outlet known as “Baba Charlie Nyonya Cake”. Surprisingly, the outlet is obscured from the main road. You have to walk a short distance from the main road as the lane is not accessible to vehicles. For first time visitors, particularly tourists, don’t be dismayed to find that it is housed in a small wooden plank house with zinc roof. It is in this small premises that you find good stuff i.e. traditionally home-made Peranakan kueh. Literally you can find all types of Nonya kueh. As I understand Baba Charlie is very popular amongst tourists and indeed you can’t say you have been to Malacca if you do not drop in to this place. The popularity and the returns of regular customers are testimony of its good stuff and reasonable prices. As regards it’s service we have no qualm knowing very well that it’s staffs are simple folks. I guess Baba Charlie will continue to operate in this unique rustic ambience environment for the many years to come.

This is a big disappointment, the onli reason for 2 star r the pre-packed nasi lemak & deep fried sotong. After reading a few articles promotiog Baba Charlie, our family decided to give this place a try only to find out it's on the level of those Paranakan restaurants along Malacca river, fit for western tourist only 😠 The meal - fish maw soup which doesn't have any taste of the fish maw, chicken ponteh was dessert sweet & the chap chai was bland...only the deep fried sotong was good. The 2 plate full of keuh we had was also sad. Coconut, the soul of Paranakan kueh, must be too expensive for Baba Charlie he is so stingy with it that the kuek without coconut flavour taste like lumps of sugary starch 😣 the onli 1 thing that tasted good was the sambal in the small packet of nasi lemak. 1st time there & never again. We r Singaporeans & over the years we visited Malacca 2~7 times yearly, tried many 'famous' Paranakan restaurants in Malacca & surprisingly it was the smaller, less known 1s that tasted authentic. Restaurants like Nancy's kitchen, Aunty Lee, Amy Heritage, Manis J etc was disappointing but at least they use proper spices. Places like Ole Sayang & Far East cafe serve more authentic nyonya dishes & my favourite is Our kitchen nyonya restaurant, for it's tasty beef rendang & pork asam👍

Actually wanted to come here for breakfast but was thinking about it after reading the not so consistent reviews here. Eventually decided to just drop by here to pick up some nonya kuehs. Entered the restaurant and the dining area was quite packed, and so was the kueh section where there were a lot of people choosing and paying for the kuehs. Quite a bit of selection didn't really know which to pick ended up taking quite some time to decide. Decided to get a bigger mixed box so could probably try a variety of the kuehs at a cheaper price. Not so sure if it was cheaper as didn't really calculate the difference. Other than kuehs there were also quite a variety of other local products for sale. I took a bottle of chili chinchalok. I asked for the ondeh when I saw the label but nothing placed there. The guy at the counter said will check but he ended up staying at the counter and didn't check for me. I paid for the items and left, then back in the hotel when I was packing my stuff I realized that the chinchalok was not in the plastic bag. Felt unhappy with this experience, even though the kuehs were pretty decent, had a few and it tasted not bad. Not sure if I would visit them again.

Visit date: 24/1/2023 Came for breakfast, arrived at 9am just as they opened for biz and manage to beat the crowd to get a table. There’s nasi lemak and meehoon bungkus & many choices of kuih. Can also order their ala carte dishes. Nasi lemak super sad with pathetic amount of sambal, a pewny piece of egg and no peanuts - RM1.50 / pack. I can get way better quality in KL for just an extra RM0.20 Meehoon was not bad, in terms of portion and taste. Kuihs are still nice and probably still one of the better ones in melaka. Service meh. Floor staffs not friendly and can’t ask more questions cos they get agitated and would answer back rudely. Found a hair in the nasi lemak, told the lady staff, she took it away then came back and ask us “so what you want to do now (in Chinese)?” then we were like “erm…change to a new one for us?” And only then she said “no more” 😑 Honestly, it’s not that hair that’s the problem cos it happens and we’re ok but it’s the way she handled the situation that’s the problem. Overall food is ok and comfortable dining place with relatively reasonable prices but their service really irks me. Do all popular businesses have to be like this? 🤷🏻♀️

This was my last stop before heading home after a short makan trip to Melaka. Putting this as my last stop cos wanna ta pau some kuihs and having had a fairly heavy breakfast, did not get to try any of the heavier dishes they have on their menu. Ordered their cendol which initially looked quite unappetising cos of the colour. This is in comparison to the one I had in Christina's. Overall it was ok, the ice shaving was not as fine as C's but the taste somehow was 'saved' by the fragrant gula Melaka. Cendol wise, they taste slightly harder than C's but still better than the commercial ones in KL. As for the popiah - taste good, very fragrant, no overpowering dried shrimp taste. I am not a big fan of popiah and don't usually eat it at all but since I was here on a foodie trip, must try eat lor. Surprised that it wasn't off-putting for me so this was a good end to my trip Came home and dived into the kuihs for supper. Tbh, they don't really impress me. Not sure if it's because they are so commercialised now or these nyonya kuihs are so widely available in KL nowadays that they don't taste any different than what we can get in KL.
