Masjid Tengkera a masjid within a masjid. The mosque was built in 1728 by Muslim traders from India. The mosque was built during the Dutch occupation by Muhammad Salleh. It is said to be the second oldest mosque in Malaysia. The mosque went under renovation in 1892.
I did a google search and found an older mosque - Masjid Kampung Laut in Tumpat Kelantan in the 1676, but was later said to be used in 1859 by Sultan Kelantan.
The Masjid Tengkera was built by Sumateran, malay communities. What is interesting with the 2 oldest mosques in the country is that they had Minarets that resembled Pagoda like roof, rather than the South Asia and Middle East domed roof.
