I have tried a few Ipoh roast ducks. Most of it were delicious and aromatic. I read the reviews about the roast duck here and decided to give it a try. Then I noticed I have actually eaten their roast ducks before but from a different branch (the one in town near Octagon). I came here on Sunday around 11am to pack for brunch. It was busy dueing that time. The waiter who took my order was a foreigner, I try to look for a local worker but the local workers who are in charge of chopping the ducks and packing don't seem to bother coz their job is only packing. So the foreigner got our order wrong (we ordered 1 whole duck and requested to put half in a box and half in another) the order he took is only for half the duck). When my husband mentioned that its hard to order from foreigner as they sometimes don't understand what we are saying, the other local workers just looked at us with a blank face. We ordered the signature roast duck and the taste wasn't as good as the one in town. For us the duck was a bit dry and not as aromatic. The rice was small packet. I definitely will not come back to...
Read moreAs one of the pioneers in the roasted duck industry in Ipoh, Sun Yeong Wai used to set the standard for what great roasted duck should taste like. I’ve been a loyal customer since I was young, but sadly, my recent visit left me quite disappointed.
The roasted duck, once known for its succulent and juicy texture, has become noticeably dry and less flavourful. What’s equally frustrating is the declining service standard — we sat for quite some time before any waiter even came over to take our order. For such an established restaurant, this level of inattentiveness really shouldn’t happen.
One of the signatures of a good roasted duck meal here has always been the sour plum sauce, which perfectly complements the richness of the duck. Surprisingly, it wasn’t served alongside our duck rice and only came when we specifically requested it.
It’s a real pity to see a reputable and once-beloved restaurant drop so much, especially in terms of service and quality. I truly hope they will look into these issues and bring back the standard that made so many of us loyal customers in the...
Read moreWhile the roast duck, siew yuk and char siew taste good, I'm giving them 1-star because I feel they are dishonest. My wife ordered a quarter roast duck and roast pork. Then the waitress asked if we want to mix the roast pork with char siew so we said yes (we assumed they will just "mix" the char siew/roast pork together). When they served the dish, it was in a large plate, so we didn't think too much about it. Only at the end when I paid the bill, this large dish is actually called the "Grand Platter" which costs RM48. If we knew this, we wouldn't have ordered this "platter" and just stick to normal roast duck rice. Also, their "recommended" pomelo drink with milk (RM8.50) is too expensive and taste bitter. FYI we didn't ask for the price at the beginning as they didn't give us the menu it also didn't sound right to question the price of every single item. Anyway, not a good experience to feel...
