One of the two largest bakeries in Sandakan (the other one being Kelly Cake House). They have many branches in various locations around the city, but this one was the original and is the largest. The shop is split into two sections: one selling bakery products, and the second being a restaurant.
They have a wide selection of bread, including sliced loaves, individual and multiple prepacked buns, cold sandwiches, donuts, cakes, cookies, tarts, and also racks of party products (banners, cake candles, gifts etc) as well as a limited range of bread spreads. They have several display fridges for mini cake slices, whole decorated cakes, and small desserts.
The bread from here is quite good, some may be a bit sweet, but overall they produce decent buns and loaves. Both their decorated and loaf cakes, on the other hand, are frankly abysmal (sugary sweet and artificial tasting). Prices for their bakery products including the pre-ordered cakes are about 20–50 sen more expensive than other places e.g. Kelly, Fat Cat, Hai Joo, but a few of them are (arguably) nicer – I like their Polo Flossy, Cheese bread, Mexico buns, Fruitcake, and Pejat cake in particular.
The restaurant in the adjoining section sells a variety of made-to-order dishes: local and foreign e.g. nasi lemak; fried and soup noodles; pasta and steaks – a pretty standard menu you can find in many air-conditioned eateries in Sandakan. Again, prices are higher than other restaurants, but the food is slightly better. It gets packed during lunchtimes and dinners.
As a bakery staple in Sandakan for many locals, this place is worth going to for relatively safe standards of bread, and a location that's convenient enough and with a comfortable...
Read moreHad the chance to lunch at one of Sandakan legendary cafe, Novelty Cafe and Cake House.
Parking 🅿️ quite full nearby the corner where the cafe located but managed to find a spot nearby.
And once you open the door you’ll be welcomed by the various pastries 🥮 🥐 and the aroma is really nice.
There’s already a queue waiting for seats as it’s fully occupied 😱 since it’s 12 noon at the time.
Also a lot of people in the store buying their cakes 🍰 , bread 🍞 🥖 and other pastries like croissants 🥐, tarts 🥮 and puffs
For lunch ordered one of the recommended lamb 🐑 curry 🍛 which came with rice and additional side dish prawn 🍤 fritters or known as cucur udang.
Both are good and delicious, fresh prawn used for the cucur udang and for the curry lamb, stew are thick and flavourful 🤤
Honestly there are plenty from the menu that I want to try but unfortunately the portion of the cucur udang and lamb curry is just to huge! 🤣
Even can’t manage to slot in any of the desserts 🧁 from their pastries shelf.
Definitely will be back for the rest in their menu. Saw few of other tables ordered Pisang Goreng (with 🧀), Fried Kuey Tiaow perhaps it’s their specialty
Cafe is pretty clean and the crew also are...
