Bismark Restaurant — Restaurant in Baja California Sur

Family and I have eaten at Bismark seafood restaurant for nearly 8 years. Our dine-in experience has been a hit or miss. When we do visit La Paz, Bismark is usually not our go-to seafood restaurant. Basically, it would all depend on what type of food we were in the mood for and how much we were willing to spend.

A couple weeks ago, on a recent visit to La Paz, my friends and I were craving lobster. Although, personally not a lobster fan, I joined the group anyway as it was their first time at Bismark (one friend has never been to La Paz). It was Tuesday around 7pm. Lots of tables, indoor and out. I recall seeing several other customers scattered all over the large open-setting ocean view restaurant. More waiters were working, also scattered throughout the entire large establishment, appearing to look busy. Alejandro was our server for the evening. He was basic, nothing over the top.

Our order: lobster, clams, Campenchana mix, gobernador shrimp tacos, seafood tostadas and other appetizers.

We didn’t get the opportunity to eat at the same time as the $80 lobster dish arrived later, almost 45 minutes later than the rest of our order. The shrimp tacos had to be sent back because the tortilla shells were served wilted and not fried and crunchy. Nonetheless, we had no further issues, our dinner was good.

The salsa bar could have used some attention.

Íbamos un grupo de 8 personas, de las cuales algunos eran extranjeros (Australia, Europa y Asia en su mayoría). Ellos no dejan propina, en sus países no dejan propina, no se acostumbra así que en México tampoco lo hacen (a menos que el servicio sea excepcional según lo que ellos mencionan). Ese no es problema mío ni mi asunto… yo dejé propina de mi consumo y otras dos personas (de Estados Unidos) dejaron propina de su consumo también. Sin embargo, aún así no se acompletaba el 10% de propina del total de la cuenta, por lo que el mesero se molestó y me dijo que si por qué no dejamos propina del 10%, yo le dije que yo sí había dejado y me señaló quienes NO dejaron propina (como si yo los fuera a obligar a dejar). Le dije al mesero que era decisión de ellos no dejar propina, yo cumplí con mi parte y molesto me dijo que si por qué yo no le acompletaba el 10% de propina (que por cierto la cuenta fue grande porque éramos 8 personas). Le dije que no me correspondía y se molestó aún más! Empezó a decir que no se le hacía Justo, que él había atendido la mesa correctamente etc… pero pues la propina ES OPCIONAL y si otras personas deciden no dejar propina no es MI problema. El mesero molesto todavía al final nos dijo “suerte en sus países” de mala forma y en modo burlesco y sarcástico. Al final NO es responsabilidad del consumidor dar el sueldo al mesero, es responsabilidad del empleador. No tienen por qué molestarse y mucho menos querer forzar a los comensales a dar propina… la comida estuvo X, el lugar X y el servicio Gracias a ese mesero lo califico como pésimo. Definitivamente está sobrevalorado y ya no volveremos (en otra ocasión esperamos 40 minutos...

The food is okay. The seafood soup was good, but fish, langosta, and shrimp tacos were just okay. The service is bad. 10 minutes went without getting any service whatsoever, we were just waved to sit down, and weren’t even given menus, it wasn’t until I went to the bar to ask for service that someone came over.
