CDMX Eats 2024 #100, Korean #2, fried chicken #2: my 100th unique food spot in CDMX this year! 🥳
My partner was craving fried chicken, but we weren't super hungry. Several friends had recommended OPPA, and I noticed the pollo frito/fried chicken portions were only 2 pieces (versus the 14-piece we typically order!).
We ordered pollo frito x3: original $50, ajo y soya $60, and gochujang* $60. Cerveza bohemia cristal x2 $40/ea. Of the fried chicken, the gochujang was our favorite. I'd give this place a 3.5/5, but I will round up.
My issue with OPPA is twofold: 1) the chicken is pre-made; 2) the space is TINY.
I'm not saying it's frozen--it's not--but we sat at the table by the kitchen and the chicken was already fried before we ordered. Also, no other table ate fried chicken while we were there. The "original" order we ate was cold, and I think the sauced ones were warm because the chicken warmed up when sauce was applied.
Many reviews mention this place is small, but you really won't know until you go there. There are 3 small tables in a parklet on the street, a small table with 3 chairs by/basically in the kitchen, and a picnic table that can (comfortably) seat 4 but probably seats 6.
I strongly prefer and recommend Coreana Chicken in Del Valle. A 14-piece order of fried chicken (half original/half sauce of your choice) is $309, and beers and soju are cheaper. There are more sauce (~10+ instead of 2), beer, and soju choices. Most importantly the chicken is to-order and comes out PIPING hot and is super fresh. The space is larger and the vibe is better.
The vibe at OPPA is kind of weird: KPOP music quietly played by the street/parklet but metal blaring from the kitchen. The one really good thing about OPPA is the service was excellent. Super attentive and super...
Read moreI am a bit of a snob when it comes to East Asian food, and know Korean food pretty well. Going to Oppa, without looking at the menu, I had a craving for soon dubu tofu soup and pan chan.
This wasn’t on the menu, so I had some Korean curry with fried chicken. Even though I love Thai, Japanese and Indian curries, I had never had the Korean version.
The chicken and vegetables were great and it had a fresh homemade flavor, but it just didn’t hit. Curry should be rich and flavorful and (usually) spicy, but this wasn’t.
I am sure the 4.9 rating is deserved, so I will give this place another shot. BTW, there wasn’t any pan chan with my meal, but they had some nice pickled cabbage and onion.
The service was great and the restaurant itself...
Read moreI loooved this place, made me happy and I can't wait to go back~ I reallyyy love korean food the most, I also enjoy cooking myself so, honestly, I become quite picky and critical about the things I eat... I've been at South Korea as well, and since I was there, this is one of the best korean foods I've had, specially in Mexico so far, for real!!
The service is great as well and the atmosphere aesthetics of the place are very nice, chill and lovely too ☺️. If I ever get a boyfriend he would have to bare with me wanting to go eat there at least once a week or something 😳😬🙃
Maybe the only thing they're missing is some 막걸리 and 파전 on the menu!!!! That would be sooooooooooo gooooddd 🤤🤤🤤 specially going along with the rainy weather in...
