Alert Alert Alert - Buyer Beware
Metate Restaurant on the Zocalo in Mexico City has great views and good food, but they have deceptive practices as follows:
They said they would only accept cash when I went to pay the bill, despite the fact that there are no signs posted, no indication on the menu and no indication given in advance by the seater or server of this requirement.
They converted US dollars to pesos at the rate of 16 to 1. All other establishments use 18 to 1. When challenged that their rate was ridiculously low, the boss wanted to negotiate with me to 17 pesos.
Their menu clearly states, in Spanish, that leaving a tip is not obligatory. However, my bill had an automatic 25% tip added on. We were only two people.
So, in summary, great views, good food, and multiple deceptive practices. There are many other restaurants around the Zocalo that I would suggest trying before...
Read moreHad a delicious meal. Two of us split the vegetarian soup - which, let me stop there because YUM! It was lightly spicy and with the perfect tartness. Then we split the sampler platter (these dishes have other more specific names I forget, sorry!). The mole enchiladas and chipotle bean covered peppers were far and away the stars of the show, but the other meats were all also good! Now the real reason I’m leaving 5 stars is the service. Read moreI loved it! 🖤 This is a cozy, clean and comfy little corner in La Roma. Got there at 1 pm ish so it was empty, but the crowd starts coming at 2pm ish. I got tasajo (meat) with enchiladas and salad. It was absolutely delicious! The red pepper sesame seed sauce is spicy AF but flavorful.
