Bar Ilegal — Restaurant in Oaxaca

The bar has bar, hightop and cushioned table seating. The motif is very dark yet intimate. They have a stage for live music and there was a band on Thursday night when we went. We were greeted as soon as we arrived and served quickly. The bar seemed busy and the crowd was mostly locals and domestic tourists around 30-40 ish and pretty mellow. We enjoyed a beer and head off before the band started so not sure what type of music they played. Before the bank they played music at a normal volume so you could talk and hear fine. Pretty close to the worst service I have ever had anywhere in the world. I would give it zero stars but that simply is not possible. My service was so bad that I decided to take the time out of my day to write this review in the hopes I would spare others from having their day ruined. The bartender barely spoke to us and stood there awkwardly as we had a drink and tried to have a conversation. As I said service was bad and we were the only ones there so we left money for our tab plus a general tip and decided to go elsewhere to find a better vibe. This spot seriously oozes character. From the moment you walk in, you can tell the interior was thoughtfully put together—dark, moody lighting, gritty textures, and some seriously dope wall art that screams rock ‘n’ roll. It’s not trying too hard—it just is cool.

The whole place has that effortlessly edgy vibe, like the kind of bar you’d stumble into in a Tarantino movie. Mezcal and beer are the staples here, and both are solid. Add in live music that actually slaps, and you’ve got a recipe for a night you don’t want to end.

The staff? Super chill, super friendly, and clearly love the space as much as the regulars do. That kind of energy...
