The Museo Textil de Oaxaca is an absolute gem, hidden in the lively streets of Oaxaca City. This isn’t just a museum; it’s a celebration of Oaxaca’s rich, vibrant textile traditions and the incredible artistry of its indigenous communities.
From the moment you step inside, you’re immersed in a world of intricate weaves, bold patterns, and stories told through fabric. The exhibits are constantly changing, so each visit brings something fresh, but what never changes is the way they bring the textile heritage of Oaxaca to life. You don’t just see the textiles—you feel the tradition, the culture, the artistry that has been passed down through generations.
One highlight? Watching live demonstrations of traditional weaving techniques. Seeing the artisans at work is mesmerizing, and it adds a whole new level of appreciation for the skill and patience behind each piece. It’s not just about the final product—it’s about the process, the history, the hands that bring these fabrics to life.
The museum itself is beautiful—housed in a historic building that feels like part of the exhibit. It’s the perfect backdrop for the textiles on display, offering a peaceful, reflective space to absorb the creativity and heritage all around you. And incredibly, it’s free! Though trust me, you’ll want to leave a donation after seeing the heart and soul poured into this place.
Whether you're a die-hard textile fan or just someone looking for something unique in Oaxaca, this museum will pull you in and leave you inspired. It’s the kind of place you stumble upon and can’t stop thinking about long after...
Read moreFree! In depth descriptions and details about a diverse but small collection of textiles from the region - the booklet of descriptions which accompanies the 27 pieces in the first gallery - all in Spanish. We are moderate level students, and got a great deal of the content. The second gallery also had a booklet in Spanish. All items were clearly and cleverly displayed, guests were sparse and quiet. Upstairs, we spent time viewing maps of the regions of Oaxaca and their traditional figures in textiles - amazing amount of details on each map! Front desk has a secure system for storing hats, backpack/purse, water bottles. Gift shop items were top quality wearable and household products, top...
Read morePretty disappointing. Everyone's reviews raved about the museum however each piece didn't have an information placard (which is quite standard for museums) and so you're left looking at these textiles with little to no information. They have larger signs in Spanish at the entrance of each room but I would have better appreciated each piece if they had their own information and even at least just the year they were made printed next to it. Photos from other reviews showed a different part of the museum which wasn't accessible for us so it was a very short and unstimulating visit. Otherwise the architecture is nice and it...
