This delightful cafe is more homey than elegant but it is not without a touch of the latter.
[Edit: I have now been almost a dozen times] The first time i went i sat under a citrus tree heavy with fruit in the gravel/grass portion of the outdoor seating courtyard.
While the street is a fairly noisy one on a Saturday morning, and the cafe did have light jazz playing, i found the distance from those sources of background sounds quite sufficient for joining a teleconference via their WiFi network.
There is a slightly raised platform with a few less rustic chairs and tables than the simple wooden ones under the trees, and this is even further from the street and the cafe.
The food offering included all the standard Oaxacan breakfast items plus what looked like better than average bakery items. They do have a bakery oven behind the bar so perhaps they are quite delicious but i will have to visit again in order to confirm that. [Confirmed. Their pastries are pretty good!]
While the proprietor recommended their coffees and local chocolate drinks, i was in the mood for something herbal and delighted to find they had fresh puleo. [I can now definitely recommend their hot cocoa too. I've also had a customized one when i asked for chocolate made with one of their teas infused in the water first.]
I ordered and paid for three mugs of the puleo that first time. It was delicious as well as pleasing on the hands; the mug it was served in was a rustic clay vessel of the sort that feels very nice to hold while one is busy solving the problems of the world.
The green entomatadas were nice, and the eggs 'tiernos' were perfectly done, with liquid yolks and solid whites.
All in all a very lovely place i will be returning to...
Read moreSuch a cool place! We went here twice (or three times?) during our stay in Oaxaca and I will say the ambience has a very outdoorsy, in-your-backyard-patio type of hype. The staff was very friendly and they were pretty okay at keeping track of all of our orders. The first time we came here I ordered a Mediterranean sandwich which was my FAV! Would highly recommend. The second time my friend and I split an avocado baguette (grande, dear heavens it was a lot), but that wasn't the best in my opinion. We also split a brownie and a strawberry-cream filled almond croissant, which were quite delectable. Would also recommend their agua de chocolate and jarra de limonada--seriously, try the limonada! One of our friends said it was "revolutionary" on her standards...
Read moreI wandered in here in the pouring rain solely because the wall outside says “Hay Tacos Aquí” — lovely small courtyard, absolutely delicious tacos at a very, very low price, and the service was great despite the downpour. The tacos are small and flavorful, and although the chairs and cups may be a bit worn, the low price should clue you in that this isn’t a fancy place in a hotel lobby. Feels like you are in a neighbor’s backyard, or a roadside stand moved into the ciudad. I don’t eat much so two tacos were plenty, and my coke cost more than my meal. ...
