Rip off. Do not come here. Especially if you're a tourist.
I visited this place back in November while looking for a good quality bottle of mezcal to bring home to enjoy over New Year's with friends and family. Had heard good things about Casa de Mezcal and came recommended. We sampled a few mezcals with them and settled on a bottle we all enjoyed. The price was marked up for tourists, but fine, is expected.
The first indicator something was off should have been how they wrote 'Jabali' in marker on the side of the bottle. No way of proving what mezcal it actually was until I got home. When we opened it up, it most definitely is NOT jabali. I've worked in the spirit business for a number of years and sampled numerous mezcals. 100% this is not the mezcal we enjoyed in the bar. This is a marked up GARBAGE quality espadin. Flavours are way too sharp to be a more mature maguey. Like drinking paint thinner at best. Considering pouring it down the sink it's so bad. Utter waste of €60. No one enjoyed it that sampled it.
If you're looking to purchase a bottle from here, please, take your business elsewhere. They're just looking to rip off...
English Review: A ceremonial cantina full of living history Where the past dances among murals and mezcal
This place is far more than just a bar… it’s a living temple of Mexican art and cultural memory. From the moment you step inside, the murals surround you—rich with ancestral figures, Mesoamerican symbols, and a design that honors deep heritage.
Yes, you can drink and dance… but you can also breathe in culture, reflect, and feel the soul of those who have gathered here through time. The service is excellent, the music is joyful and danceable, and the atmosphere is genuinely warm and welcoming.
On my last visit, I had the privilege of sharing this space with a couple visiting Oaxaca. I knew immediately this was the place to bring them—a true icon that has seen generations of Oaxacans pass through its doors. It is even said that historical figures once came here to refresh their spirits.
10/10 — A hidden gem that deserves more than a visit; it...
Read moreIm not so much of a bar person, it takes a lot for me to feel comfortable. Being said, I very much enjoyed this little local bar. They have a great jukebox where I found some old 80's songs, quite obscure songs even. Nothing like hearing Nina Hagen over the sounds of Mexican soccer on the TV and cheers from the patrons. The bartender was the real winner, very attentive and sincere. Although the Mezcal was supposed to be the big draw of this bar, I enjoyed the atmosphere more than anything. Grab a stool at the bar,...
