Beautiful restaurant! Chose to have dinner here just because of how pretty it was.
First time for my friend and I, in Oaxaca! And I will trust that maybe we didn’t choose the right restaurant or we just weren’t a fan of Oaxacan food.
Walking in, staff was amazing!! Super friendly, the beginning of the dining experience they sit you around the women making tortillas. They give you a tortillas with multiple salt and salsa to try.
Then after bring you up to the rooftop.
Our waiters were very nice and friendly.
And reading the menu, we had no idea what a lot of things meant, in which our waiter did go over the menu with us.
To be honest, nothing sounded appetizing. But we were there to try something new so we sat through plus we felt horrible to have to get up and go.
So we just ordered tostada, for an appetizer which had avocado on the bottom lettuce, and this fermented sausage that tasted like bologna. Tostadas on the side
We ordered the tamale, it was the most edible from it all. In the sweeter side.
We ordered three generations mole with beef and beans.
We did have a misunderstanding on what beans with the waiter, another waiter brought out a seven bean plate. Which we mentioned that wasn’t what we asked for. And it seemed to be a huge deal, someone came and explained, and said that plates aren’t allowed to be sent back because they are made to order but it would be okay and they would bring the one we wanted.
But the experience while we ordered to when we got our food was odd. There was a woman whom was probably a waitress, who just stood in front and stared at us the whole time you were there. And once we had the incident with the beans, our waiter was changed to a younger guy.
When we asked for our bill, I did mention that if they had to charge me for the beans that they had accidentally brought out for us, but it would be OK to be charged and I understand how things couldn’t be sent back. But they said it would be OK.
When we left and said goodbye to our original waiter, he didn’t really seem so nice anymore. Wish this incident was handled better. We didn’t want to get him in trouble.
The food just wasn’t edible for us at all. We ate whatever we could since we were starving from all the walking.
To us the food lacked in flavor, salt, taste. We can’t pin point what it was but also didn’t want to be disrespectful and just ate what we could and left.
Food, waters and lemonades: 1,700 pesos
If anyone else has a better experience, then maybe it was just our taste buds. The restaurant is beautiful and...
Read moreThe restaurant is beautiful - unfortunately the overall experience leaves a lot to be desired.
Both the bakery and atoleria on the ground floor are great, so we thought we'd try the restaurant.
On arriving, we were seated in front of two ladies making tortillas, to sample the tortillas and salsas. Right off the bat, things seemed a bit disorganized - as it took quite a while to provide us with tortillas. Then, since they didn't seem to have any smaller salsa vessels, we actually had to pass large molcajetes back and forth with random other guests to get some of the salsas. Unfortunately, we were only able to sample 3 of the 4 salsas as they had apparently run out of the 4th one (this was at ~8pm on a Thursday). The salsas were actually the best part of the whole meal though.
Shortly after, we were brought to our table. Somehow they only provided us with one menu to share. While the staff all seemed friendly enough, they weren't really attentive at all. We were sitting near the bar and for our whole meal, there were staff hanging around nearby, but none seemed particularly inclined to pay us any attention.
The way the menu is presented makes it difficult to understand the overall nature of the dish (e.g., app, salad, "main", etc.), and no real guidance was given around how to order appropriately.
We got: A dish with a variety of greens - it was bland, with little flavour from either the dressing or the other salad ingredients.
Tetelas - literally left zero impression on me. I cannot remember anything about them.
Mole de Laurel - the meat seemed overcooked and was quite dry, while still being fairly tough. The mole was mildly sweet, smokey and spicy - but in all in all, quite bland. The meat, mole and pineapple together didn't really seem to hang together or complement each others flavours.
So overall it wasn't a bad experience - but aside from the decor - it could have been much better.
If you're looking for good Oaxacan food - you're probably better off somewhere else.
If you want a beautiful rooftop patio - this is...
Read moreI was actually blown away by how bad the food was. I never return dishes, but this was the first place that I felt I should- yet I couldn't even do so because our server was a ghost, appearing only to wait on a larger group in his section. A restaurant that charges these types of prices should not create experiences like this.
I had the Tres Generaciones Mole with the turkey leg. Now, I wasn't expecting much from a turkey leg, but they managed to sink below my expectations with a flavorless, dry, and tough piece of meat. The mole was fine, but I've had better or equivalent moles at numerous other places in Oaxaca for 1/4th of the price.
My guest had the Pipián Amarillo with duck. Not only was the meat dry and tough, again, but it actually tasted bad, like the smell of an animal barn. The mole was fine, but not worth the price.
We started with the Tetelas. The suadero was the only good thing we ate the entire night. The chorizo was good quality but tasted the same as what you would get on the street, and the tasajo was eh. The "three-corn" tortillas were cool conceptually, but did not taste or feel fresh.
The cocktails were fine, but again you can get better elsewhere. The non-alcoholic options were very weak- they didn't even have agua de sabor and what they brought was overly-watery. How do you mess up agua de sabor?
Finally, all of these disappointments were brought to us by a server who paid as little attention to us as possible because there was a large group that he was also serving. From beginning to end he barely looked at us, rushed through the menu and any answers to questions we had, and also did not accommodate my friend who did not speak Spanish. Now, I don't have the expectation that anyone should speak one language or another, but the fact is that I heard him speaking very good English with the big group next to us.
Overall terrible experience, made all the more upsetting by how big the bill was, and the fact that you can get better food, prices, and rooftop views from other...
