In Playa Del Carmen you’ll find Coco’s Cabanas, a mini resort of sorts that also offers diners to come in without staying there overnight. Chas found this spot while vacationing here and loved the area so much that he rented an apartment nearby and flys down often from New Orleans to stay there.
We started with some Mezcalina’s and fresh house fried tortillas with salsa’s. The chipotle salsa and the avocado with cilantro were a nice change of pace from your normal salsa verde y rojo. The chips were clearly freshly fried and tasted great even without the salsa’s.
Our appetizers were a baked Camembert with fruit and tortillas, a sopa azteca, and fresh tuna tostadas. The Camembert was quite good as was the soup, but these tuna tostadas were one of the best appetizers I’ve ever eaten. Everything on them worked so well together and you could add a splash of soy sauce and it was even better! I’d order these as my meal at 90% of the spots in the world and leave happy!
Our entrees were a grilled pichana as well as a lobster pizza from the wood fired oven. I love cooking pichana and don’t see it often on menus when I go out so that was a nice treat. The temp was perfect for what we asked for and it was seasoned well. The potatoes that came with it had excellent flavor as well. I could take or leave the corn haha
When Chas told me he was eating pizza in Mexico with lobster on it I said “dude, what are you doing with your life?” He said just wait til you try it. He … was right. The lobster was delicious and buttery, the sauce had great flavor, and the cheese (which was not mozzarella) worked surprisingly well. I will say that I normally like my pizza crispy and this was missing that element…but the flavor more than made up for it.
Add on to all of this the fact that you’re surrounded by a beautiful pool, swings over the sand, a nice bar, and the owners dog is always nearby to say hi to haha. One of the easiest ones yet. Coco’s Cabanas in Playa Del Carmen -...
Read moreThis review is for the hotel/bunglaws and not primarily for the restaurant. Do not get fooled by the good rating for the restaurant and book rooms here. We are a young couple traveling to Mexico for the first time.
Pro: Very quiet and calm. Small property that lends to its coziness.
Cons: This is so far away from the city with such limited means of transportation that it should not be called Playa Del Carmen. You cannot walk and take any kind of public transportation. You always have to ask the hotel to call a cab whenever you want to go anywhere, which is inefficient and would cost you a lot. Otherwise, you have to rent your own car which is expensive and not advisable in a foreign country. There is nothing to do around the property. There are long empty roads with nothing but other mega resorts. The WiFi doesn't reach the rooms, but only around the pool area. When they advertised the hotel having Wifi, I was misled into thinking that the rooms have wifi too. Food in the restaurant was pretty meh. Granted, we don't eat meat and the options are very limited, but even then the pizzas we nothing to rave about. The water in bathrooms are so salty, you can sense it without even tasting them. Salt water is BAD for skin and hair. I repeat, it is EXTREMELY DAMAGING for skin and hair. You cannot expect us to buy 200ml water bottles for 30 peso every time we want to wash face/take bath.
Overall the vibe at the place felt right for someone who is retired (older) and doesn't like moving around. There isn't much to do at the property either. We paid 500+ USD for five nights and had to forfeit it and leave after just one day because it felt so horrible, and we didn't want to ruin our entire holiday...
Read moreSylvia, the beautiful and charming owner and hostess welcomed me warmly upon arrival after a failed taxi pick up from Cancun airport and a very expensive replacement. I was sat down with a complimentary margarita and told to relax, she would look after me. After that, she and all the wonderful staff ensured that I had the very best time. My cabana was sweet, the bed very comfortable and a good variety of food and drink available for breakfast. For the first few days I used Petit Lafitte’s beach club, 600 pesos weekdays and 800 at the weekend. You had use of sunloungers and parasols and food and drink allowance up to the amount paid. I found the food here vastly bland, tasteless and disappointing. The menu at Coco’s was about the same price but the quality of food was impressive, so much better, in a different league altogether. The stuffed fish fillet was gorgeous but everything was tasty. The restaurant is always busy at night with visitors from all around and no one leaves unhappy. Had a nice visit to Playa del Carmen to the Frida Kahlo museum but then I succumbed to a bad cold and cough. Sylvia insisted after a few days when I was getting worse that she drive me to and from the doctor to get antibiotics etc for a chest infection. Since then I have relaxed quietly by the pool every day to recover so that I will be well enough to fly home tomorrow. I will miss Sylvia and all the lovely people at Coco’s but am taking home many...
