This is my favorite place in Mexico. When you meet the owner, Xchel, and every employee in the building, you'll understand why. There is so much heart and soul in this restaurant, and in every meal they serve you. They know the history of pulque by heart; they know the history of the area by heart, including the fact that their restaurant sits atop an underground layer of the largest pyramid on earth, Tlachihualtepetl, which you can walk to in five minutes from their restaurant. They source their ingredients from indigenous farmers, and employ indigenous people as well, one of whom speaks Nahuatl. They work with other Nahuatl-speakers as well to develop their menu, which features both Nahuatl and Spanish. Next to their terrace, they also have a shop where they sell culturally rich items made or grown by local and indigenous artisans, and the owner of that shop has a Master's degree in social anthropology, focusing on indigenous medicine, so you can be sure she knows what she's talking about when she tells you about the items she sells.
You will not regret coming to Koatlikue Pachamama. I will be coming back over and over and over...
Read moreReally bad and uncomfortable experience (it's a scam). We took a tour with a company called Turiweel, the tour guy told us that he will take us for a free pulque tasting. We got to this place and a young guy greeted us and gave us an "original pulque tasting (with no flavor)", we asked if we can taste one with flavor, he brought to us a pineapple pulque in a regular cup and served it to us into our tasting cups (1-2oz) and left the regular cup on the table. We were ready to continue with our tour and another guy call Mario came to our table ask if we wanted pulque to go, we say we were ok and then he asked us to at least leave a tip and to pay for the regular cup that was on the table, we told him that we never asked for a full cup of pulque and he gave us a really bad look. We didn't want to argue so we decided to pay it. Mario if your business can't afford to give free tasting DO NOT 🚫 offer them, you should know that a tip is optional otherwise is not a tip, you are a disgrace for the local community. Overall a over priced tourist place with an ok pulque, you can definitely find better...
Read moreI’m going to be chasing the high of Chels pulque forever. I’ve had pulque in several Mexican states now and this was, by far, the freshest and tastiest I’ve ever had. The owner Chel (I might be misspelling his name, but he’s amazing), was so incredibly welcoming! We spent the day at the museum reading entirely in Spanish for several hours and our brains were FRIED yall. We were welcomed in, treated to a unique, delicious (and vegetarian I believe) homemade meal. And Chel speaks English, which for our very fried brains was perfect (we can get by in Spanish but I could barely get two words out in English that day lol). We never felt rushed or talked down to—instead we literally felt like we were having lunch and drinks at a local friends. If you’re in Cholula don’t...
