RubyJoy's Catering and Event Planning Service — Restaurant in San Miguel de Allende

We’ve been going back and forth on whether to even leave a review but landed on yes because we feel it’s our duty to let people know what happened to us.

We hired Ruby to cater a small anniversary dinner of 21 people in SMA. We were looking forward to the personalized attention and enjoying the delicious food everyone has mentioned! Over the weeks leading up to the event, it became tense with Ruby. She became frustrated and angry by our requests. Every small thing became an extra cost. Every request became a nuissance to her (i.e., I asked for cream plates and she blew up because it wasn't discussed on our very first call). Literally...everything was like pulling teeth. Often times, we would just say "nevermind" because the amount of the extra costs were honestly shocking and out of control. This all caused a lot of anxiety on our part but we stuck with Ruby because we believed she could deliver. We even asked her if she was ok and she insisted everything was fine and reconfirmed her dedication to us as our caterer and coordinator. We assumed that was the truth but it wasn't and she took it out on us in a variety of ways in the weeks leading up to the event.

Three days before the event, she accidentally sent a message to us that was meant for her assistant. In the voice message, she spoke terribly about us, the event, and our budget. The language used was truly appalling. It was clear to us that she was one person to our face and a completely different person behind our back. It was heart breaking. There was no way we could move forward with keeping her as our caterer and event coordinator after hearing those words. We kindly let her know that we didn’t want to work with her any longer. She hung up on us. We scrambled to find another caterer. She returned about 2/3 of our money (we were happily surprised by this...we didn't ask for a dime back!). Overall, extremely unprofessional behavior for someone who preaches cooking with love and serving her small community.

My daughter worked hard to plan her dream wedding. The fact that we lived in Dallas, Texas and the wedding was taking place in San Miguel, Mexico made all of the planning challenging. After much research and reading reviews, my daughter chose Ruby Joy to cater her wedding. I can’t give Ruby enough applause…. She is a beautiful person inside & out and a BOSS when it comes to all things food/catering!! My daughter & I arrived a week before her ceremony and Ruby made time to drive to where we were staying to meet us in person. Ruby felt like family. Her warmth, genuineness and incredible love for what she does was never more evident as our hearts connected with her over coffee. The night before the event I sent her a “9-1-1” message asking for something I forgot - my daughter’s snack tray so she wouldn’t be ravenous by dinner. Not only did Ruby accommodate me, she went OVER & ABOVE by making the bridal snack tray delicious and picturesque! Her staff. Her staff were the best I’ve EVER experienced at a wedding. Her ability to provide YUMMY food for the vegans to hearty options for the carnivores - she did NOT DISAPPOINT! She prepares her food with fresh ingredients, she has impeccable people skills, her management skills were on display as she managed her staff in excellence, and her attention to all the details from flatware to decor - Ruby was STELLAR! I’d hire her...

We honestly cannot say enough good things about Ruby Joy, Livia Alcarez, and Derek! From start to finish, they were absolutely incredible and made our wedding everything we dreamed of and more.

Ruby and Livia took care of absolutely everything, from helping us find the perfect venue to managing every detail with grace, creativity, and care. Planning a wedding can be overwhelming, but they made the whole experience genuinely enjoyable. Their professionalism, attention to detail, and positive energy were unmatched and the day itself went off flawlessly because of them.

Derek was an absolute legend behind the bar and kept the good vibes flowing all night. So many of our guests told us it was the best wedding they had ever been to, and we know that’s largely thanks to this amazing trio.

We didn’t just get outstanding vendors—we gained lifelong friends. We truly could not recommend them more. If you're lucky enough to work with Ruby, Livia, and Derek, you're in the best hands...
