The evening was hot and oppressive, the air thick with the scent of fried food and desperation. I arrived at the restaurant, my hopes high, eager to indulge in the finest cuisine the town had to offer. But alas, what I encountered was a veritable feast of disappointment.
The menu was a labyrinth of confusion, a mishmash of culinary styles that left me dizzy with indecision. The dishes themselves were a paltry attempt at sophistication, a desperate bid to appear more than what they truly were: overpriced and underwhelming.
I ordered the pork shoulder, hoping for a moment of respite in this culinary wasteland. But what arrived at my table was a travesty of meat, tough and chewy, devoid of flavor and drowning in a sea of sickly sweet sauce.
The service was no better. The waitstaff were surly and disinterested, their lackadaisical attitude a clear indication that they had long ago given up on the notion of providing a pleasurable dining experience.
As I sat there, staring down at my pitiful plate, I couldn't help but think of the words of William Faulkner: "The past is never dead. It's not even past." This meal was a reminder that the sins of the past can linger, haunting us in the present, a constant reminder of our failures.
In the end, I left that restaurant with a sense of profound disappointment, my appetite unsatisfied and my spirit broken. Faulkner once wrote that "you cannot swim for new horizons until you have courage to lose sight of the shore." But in this case, I found myself swimming in circles, unable to find my way to a...
Read moreThe biggest restaurant in San Miguel de Allende. Today I met 7 friends at Tené Restaurante and bar and at least 4 got ripped off. We set the time to meet for 3:00pm. They have a “special price” menu for the bar during 2pm till 10pm. I arrived approximately 2:45pm to save. our table ordered a mezcalita. I also ordered 3 food items from their bar food menu. I’m not complaining about the price of the bar food although you literally only get a very very small portion. When I received my bill it was almost $800 pesos. The waitress told my friend the mezalitas were $99 pesos. I was charged $280 pesos for one mezcalita and $140 approx for another I ordered. When I asked why they said the special price did not start until 2:00 but I arrived after that time at around 2:45. They wouldn’t budge on that at all. I know I wasn’t there before 2:00 I was at home at 2:00. I had also read another post on Facebook about this restaurant ripping people off by charging 50% tip when they were told to add 15% tip. I would not recommend this restaurant at all because they rip people off even when you complain to the manager....
Read moreThe atmosphere in the restaurant is a little impersonal if you are not seated close to the fireplace water feature. But the textures of the old stonework in contrast to the modern design elements are visually exciting. Service was attentive if a little befuddled and unrefined at times. Our menu choices scored a mixed review. The scallop ceviche presentation was gorgeous and the tangy sauce was promising, but alas the scallops were tough and chewy. (I returned the plate after a couple bites and was still charged full price.) The meat pizza was delicious although we've had great brick oven pizza for less than half the price elsewhere.) The lemon chicken entre was melt-in-your-mouth delicious with just the right seasoning. But the gorgeously plated ribs with a potent bbq sauce over a sweet corn base were dry and unremarkable. Dessert would be the reason to return. And the Lágrimas Sauvignon blanc was worth the hefty-for-San Miguel price. Although intriguing, for the value there are other restaurants that are a better bang for your...
