The evening started with an exhilarating zip across the bay in our glad-rags atop a zodiac rib water taxi. Fast fun, with a great skipper, from old town Budva to Dukley resort.
The meet and greet could have been better. We felt very much like we weren’t expected despite having a confirmed reservation. A cocktail order was taken by our very well turned out and polite, albeit not very chatty, waiter. Dukley margaritas, scented with a sprig of fresh rosemary, it really worked against the sharp slap of lime. Delicious, but could have benefited from a salted rim. The sad and unloved cocktail glasses stayed adhered to the table by a condensation soaked paper coaster until we left at the end of the meal.
Bread was served, and prosecco expertly opened but beginner level poured. The bread was interesting but a struggle to eat without any lubrication – we had to ask for butter – and could have done with a small introduction. Some fizzy wine was sipped whilst we enjoyed the rather spectacular views and then it was time for appetizers of sushi (for my wife) and octopus salad for me. So close to 5 stars, real quality chefery. Nicely formed sushi, fresh with a light spice, tuna, good rice well vinegered with the right sweetness. The octopus salad was a little scrooge-esque with the meat (septopus?), but what was there was light, fresh and tender, sea-sweet but somewhat lost in too much, well dressed, good rocket and chickpea salad. Overall delicious.
I was still three spoons from the end of the salad when our mains arrived. I had to juggle plates rather weirdly as my entree of steamed sea bass in an Asian broth was, in front of me thrust. A premature firing? Mains were great. Soft bass, beautifully steamed and filleted, in a Asian influenced sweet ginger liquor. Giant tempura/panko Cray fish for my wife, belonged with a yakatori pak choi, for example, accompaniment really, but was instead rested on a caeser like salad. Tasty enough but a slightly jarring fusion. A rather long wait then ensued whilst we watched the last dribbles of condensation finally destroy the paper coasters now melted onto the 2-hour old empty cocktail glasses. We ordered a taster-plate of deserts to share. We would have been up for some desert wine, but the table was so littered with empty glasses by this point, we let the opportunity to explore the offerings escape without resistance.
The deserts were tasty, captivating and attractive. A whisper of the 80's lingered uncomfortably around a couple of the four tasters, but overall again nice. Our waiter came and took our digestif order. Espresso martinis arrived in due course but could have been a left over coffee. Lacking in alcohol and too watery, they disappointed where the earlier rosemary infused margaritas had wowed. Shame. Bills were requested along with a taxi (A boring pedestrian land based version this time – the water taxi stops at 2100 in june). The annoying receipts were gathered and summed and we paid expecting an update on taxis imminently. After twenty minutes we tried to get the attention of a waiter for an update and after five minutes or so of trying, got a waiter over and were informed the taxi was on its way to the car park. No description or signposting was offered, but after a few bumbling wrong turns we managed.
In summary, the food was the best we’ve had in Montenegro. But perhaps that is unfair, as the food here has been generally a bit woeful, like the canned computer covers of 90's hits splurged depressingly out of suicidal speakers nearly everywhere we went. Dukley chefs have done well, and should be proud, but front of house and management need sending west to waiting schools.
So close, and probably the...
Read moreUnfortunately, my family and I didn't have a great experience at this restaurant. From the start, all the way to the last interaction there were issues that came up again and again, which left us with an unpleasant experience of our last night of vacation in Montenegro.
I first want to say, for the most part, the food overall was good. Except for the chicken (was super dry) with veggies and asparagus (old and limp).
Because our family has different dietary restrictions, we asked the waiter in regards to certain ingredients, but unfortunately the waiter either didn't have answers to basic things like which veggies are included (had to check with the kitchen), or provided answers that ended up being incorrect (told us one thing, another thing was brought out).
Throughout our 1-2 hours there, we had to keep looking for the waiter, and trying to get his attention. He never once asked us about our meals, or offered dessert. We had to hunt him down, while he kept chatting with other staff (the place was almost empty when we were there, so it wasn't busy).
After we paid our check, I noticed we were charged for an additional side, and upon asking, the waiter gave us the wildest response - apparently we got charged for a side dish (the limp asparagus) we didn't order because the restaurant didn't have the side usually included with the main course we ordered. We weren't given any previous information about this. He apologized and provided a refund for the side.
If you are looking for a high end experience (as that is what we paid for), I wouldn't recommend this place. Though the food is pretty good, the service, location and overall approach to customers isn't worth the...
Read moreWe made reservations for 8pm on a Tuesday in August but were still relieved to receive a table by the water in the sand (which isn't guarateed). Beautiful setting with soft piano music, overhead strands of lights and water just steps away. It began well with greetings and menus. We ordered still water, which was brought quickly. It seems like they have teams of servers--one main and another support person or two. I ordered a glass of Vida chardonnay for 12e. The server brought the bottle and let me taste it, which was appreciated, only he didn't ever fill my glass the full amount of 5 ounces, maybe half that. My partner ordered a beer, which were all about 7e. It was a mini beer, not even 12 ounces. We ordered ravioli, grilled calamari, side of potatoes, and a baguette. All good but the calamari on a bed of risotto was especially tasty. Once we got our food, we think our primary server went home and didn't tell us because we never saw hime again and didn’t know which other server one to ask for the check as they were attending to others. We waited for our guy and finally asked another server to bring our check. In most Budva restaurants, they leave the check on your table once you order, but maybe that is not the Dukley way. We were a little disappointed that we didn't get a chance to order more drinks (or get the rest of my wine pour), and, who knows, maybe we would have ordered dessert. In conclusion, a very special setting for a meal, good food, terrible wine pour and mini beer, with...
