Although my previous reviews of this place have been overwhelming positive, the same can no longer be said unfortunately. During the last year or so, prices for the food have gone up several time, contrary the quality has been steadily declining.
During my last visit (15-08-24) service was exceptionally slow. Their new apetiser, the steak tartar with chorizo, was nice! However the same cannot be said about their long-running Sparibs. They were not very tender and the flavours were much more mild than in the past.
When we did finally get our main course (which we ordered to a medium), it was significantly overcooked (close to being well-done). When we brought this up to the serving staff, we were inpolitely told that the steak was actually "medium" and we were just not looking at it right due to the lighting conditions of our table. As someone who eats and cooks high-quality meat almost every day, this felt insulting to my eyes and taste pallet alike. Rather than taking the Tomahawk back and presenting us with a new one, they only offered to "take of a drink from the bill". This is, in my opinion, unaccaptable for a steak costing upwards of €95.
Troughout this evening the waitress maintained a passive agressive demenour. This was also seen at a table next to us, where these guests also left after a not-so-positive conversation with the waitress in question.
We ended up leaving after this encouter as we lost all confidence of this becomming a positive expririence.
A real shame to see a place which previously offered a lot of quality decline so quickly. I hope they try...
Read moreOur favourite restaurant in Almere! Every single time we eat here it is just on point. I have not always had a great experience ordering steak in the Netherlands but Meat in the city restored my faith.
The wait staff is super fun and helpful, making it not only good for the food but also for the attention.
I recommend the rib eye steak, the chimichurri sauce is muddled in front of you with a mortar and pestle and tastes just like Argentina. The burger is my husband’s favourite in Almere (he is happy to remind me every time). The Caesar salad is delicious but I would say the portion is for sharing if you order as a side. The Parmesan truffle fries… well they are to die for.
The tomahawk is so, SO good. Definitely for sharing but I mean… I could totally devour one it’s that good.
We go 1-2x per month, usually without reservation and they can squeeze us in, but I think if it gets any more popular we will have to start booking in advance.
So happy to have...
Read moreMeat in the City is truly a hidden gem in Almere, perfect for those who appreciate a perfect steak. As someone passionate about grilling and BBQ, I have high expectations when it comes to steak, and Meat in the City did not disappoint. The steak was cooked to absolute perfection—tender, juicy, and full of flavor. Pairing it with their chimichurri sauce elevated the experience, adding a fresh and tangy contrast that complemented the rich, smoky meat beautifully.
A word of advice for first-time diners: if you prefer your steak medium, order it medium rare. In the Netherlands, steaks tend to be cooked slightly beyond the standard doneness levels you might expect elsewhere.
Overall, Meat in the City comes highly recommended for any steak enthusiast. Whether you’re a seasoned BBQ lover or just someone looking for an exceptional steak this is the...
