Foodwise, this is probably one of the best restaurants in the area right now - more or less authentic French cuisine with the right amount of spices and very nice ingredients.
The "cheese croquettes" were exactly that but every Flemish person would be disappointed by these "kaassoufflekroketten". A matter of opinion, of course, as they were still very good just not the French/Flemish cheese croquettes we were expecting.
The beef tartar was very good but closer to Filet Americain due to the finely cut meat and the abundant amount of sauce. Very very good, very good taste, but a little different than expected.
The chateubriand was very good - a bearnaise sauce would have been better than the butter-based sauce but it was still very good. The thick-cut fries were very nice and the onion/gravy sauce they came with were very nice. The skate (bonus points to one of the waitresses that knew this name by heart) was also very good as was the lentil garnish it came with. The salads were very tasty.
The creme brulee was exactly as it was supposed to be and the bread pudding was very nice.
Food definitely deserved a big 5/5 for both preparation, presentation and taste.
The interior is moderately posh with sadly a rather high percentage of high chairs and tables which did not seem very popular with the visitors as everyone preferred a regular height table.
It's a shame that the chef needed to vent his thoughts about friends and acquaintances at a volume that was about twice as loud as the other people in the restaurant. As we were seated right in fronf of the open kitchen, the loud voice and boastful stories were bothersome. The open kitchen is a nice touch, but it also means everyone can hear what you're saying especially when you have a very loud voice. The table right next to us moved to a table as far away from the kitchen as possible and we followed suit ten minutes later as the noise from the kitchen was not the "quiet table" we requested at booking. When we booked, we mentioned "a quiet table". So we were a bit surprised to be placed right next to the only other table that was occupied at the moment - right next to the kitchen with the rather loud kitchen staff. However, when we asked to move a little while later, that was no problem - so that's a bonus.
The staff is very, very friendly but lacks that little service level that you would get in a French restaurant of this level. After being seated we were left alone while the servers discussed what they did last night. Then, we were given the wine list and upon request we could order drinks, but no menu yet. We actually had to ask for the menu. It then took a very long time (subjectively, of course) to take our order while the girls were busy discussing personal things with some of the kitchen staff. Once those things were taken care of, service was quite smooth. The tables were cleared quite regularly. Staff regularly came by to see if we needed anything despite us sitting a little outside of the main area. Kitchen was relatively slow but not unacceptable for a Sunday lunch which took us about 2 hours for 2 courses and dessert. Total price for 3 persons was around 220 Euro.
3 stars instead of 4 as I certainly plan to visit again and hope to be able to raise the score to...
Read moreA very nice place with high quality food, well spiced and the meat really to the point. Only little complaint: french fries were a bit cold (not served very fresh) and at least on my plate a bit more souse would have been nice (was so tasty), but this is complaining on a very high level. Clear recommendation, I would definitely come back. Prices are on the higher side but for this taste and quality...
