La Gare — Restaurant in Amstelveen

A lovely spot nestled in the heart of Amstelveen’s old town. The atmosphere is charming, and the coffee is fantastic—definitely one of the best in the area. It’s also a great place for a takeout coffee, especially since they open earlier than most other spots around here.

However, the food is just okay—neither amazing nor terrible, so don’t expect anything too special. I was disappointed with the service, though. The owner actually hushed our table, despite the fact that two Dutch ladies were nearby and were even louder than us. It left a bad taste in my mouth, especially as an expat. This place seems more welcoming to locals, so if you’re not Dutch, you might feel out of place.

That said, if you’re flying solo and just want a good cup of coffee, it’s worth a visit. I wouldn’t recommend it for groups larger than four, though. The spaarkaart is a nice touch, with cute sayings that add to the charm. But overall, I’ll stick to coming here alone and won’t be recommending...

Op een woensdagmiddag bij La Gare binnengewandeld. Leuke zaak, ziet er gezellig uit. Mooie counter met gebak in een hoge ronde vitrine. Aardig blond meisje nam de bestelling op. We bestelden thee en een tosti. Verschillende soorten thee gepresenteerd uit een box, heerlijke smaken. Tosti kaas/tomaat was minder, duurde minstens 15 minuten en toen hij eindelijk kwam was hij te donker, te plat en te heet. Ik heb helaas mijn verhemelte verbrand. Laat een tosti met tomaat nooit zolang in een tosti-ijzer zitten, de tomaat wordt dat kokend heet! Toen ik hem openmaakte (zonder bestek want vergeten denk ik, of gaan er vanuit dat iedereen tosti met handen eet) zat er erg weinig kaas op, mag wel wat meer. Andere gasten om ons heen wilden gebakjes bestellen die in de vitrine lagen maar ik hoorde twee keer dat bepaalde gebakjes nog bevroren waren, leg ze dan niet in het zicht. Het jonge meisje was heel aardig maar er liep nog oudere dame rond in de bediening met donker haar, oogde niet echt alsof ze er zin in had, bij oogcontact zei ze niets, keek alleen maar. Als je gastvrijheid hoog in het vaandel hebt staan kun je best iets zeggen, ook al is het iets van ‘smaakt het’ maar ze zei helemaal niets, liep een beetje stuurs rond. Drie sterren voor aardige blonde dame en lekkere thee en leuke inrichting, tosti met gekookte tomaat, bevroren gebakjes en andere...

This is one of our go-to places on a regular basis. The coffee is good ranging from espresso, flat white and cappuccino. The breakfast is baked in house which includes a nice croissant and scrambled eggs.
