The croissants here were recommended hence I visited. Now, the coffee here is nice, nothing extraordinary, your standard cafe/pastry place with good quality coffee and the service was swift and professional despite being quite busy.
However, the pastries here were OK, like those supermarket pastries you can buy from the frozen section (Feb 2023). The fruit tart I ordered (Pochon with pear) had the only notable flavor which was sweetness. The crust of the tart was not flaky, rather it was crunchy and a bit harder than I expected. Still easy to take a bite from but it certainly didn't add much if anything to the tart besides a vehicle to deliver the sugary, syrupy fruit pieces. Now, I'm not sure if this is what I should expect, or if the tart leaves more to be desired. The pain au chocolat was OK. About half smaller than what is sold at Bakhuys (on Sarphatistraat).
2 of the staff who attended to us at the time (taking orders and later asking us if everything was ok, this was around 1230) felt a bit tired, which is fair, but again, leaves more to be desired in terms of service i.e. they could be a bit warmer and welcoming.
Now overall, I'm sure their other offerings might well be very nice, the bread or other pastries, but the ones we had at the time were rather mediocre, both in taste and portion, compared to other places we have been to i.e. Bakhuys and De Laatste Kruimel. There's also a bit more room to improve with the service. Then again, might be me, I might just be a bit picky.
Oh and the decor is a bit incoherent and well, not much of note. No cutlery on the table if I wanted to cut the small tart instead if eating it with my hands. Finally, the paper towels felt sandy and hard, more like paper to write on rather than to use at the table... Even the paper towels in the toilet by the sink, used to dry your hands, are softer than the ones on the table
Overall. Great place for coffee and a chat. Want good pastries? Bakhuys, De Laatste Kruimel, or Le Fournil...
Read moreGebroeders Niemeijer is situated on Nieuwendijk in Amsterdam. We visited and very much liked this French artisan bakery during our recent stay in the city. Opening hours are roughly 8.15 to 5pm daily (closed on Mondays).
We stopped by first thing in the morning enticed by the large open windows, rather full seating area with what appeared to be many more locals than tourists as well as the fresh loaves, pastries and other French bread counters on display. We also enjoyed being able to look into the lower level bakery area on full display for those who visit Gebroeders Niemeijer.
During our morning visit, we enjoyed the croissant with Italian ham and dutch cheese as well as an order of three small walnut & fig bread with gruyere cheese. breads were fresh, meat and cheeses fresh and delicious. These were very good light morning bites. Coffee orders were also very good - bold and strong without bitterness.
Overall, we really liked Gebroeders Niemeijer a place worth giving a try if you are in this area and looking for a good...
Read moreDissapointing. Coffee was nice. Goat's cheese sandwich with pumpkin was not so good.
Pumpkin was not properly peeled/skinned, unseasoned and undercooked. Roasted almonds were not roasted. Wild garlic oil was not even on the plate.
Because of the underseasoning I asked for salt and pepper, but this arrived when my sandwich was almost finished with the comment that she "forgot". When asked if everything was ok I told her my sandwich was not so good and explained. She said she would tell the kitchen. I didn't have much confidence that would happen or matter.
The bread can have a pretty thick and crunchy crust which is fine but it would be nice if cutlery would be supplied that could actually cut it.
In the showcase I saw the eclairs were not filled, but cut in half. Same for the "choux". Cheating for a place that claims they're "artisan".
Typical "looks nice on the menu but big disappointment when you actually eat it". Such a shame cause it's a good menu and a waste of...
