Café Restaurant Czaar — Restaurant in Amsterdam

Came here for a late night beer and snacks on my last night in Amsterdam as it was one of the only places nearby my hotel open. It was a bit after 11pm

The bartender and cook were very friendly and nice and the snacks I ordered were decent and filling. The chips I got were a bit overcooked and measly in size but I was pretty hungry so I ate them anyways.

After I finished my snacks and was almost done with my second beer I was looking at my phone when a young lady walked up to me and said “you need to leave now we are closed” to which I responded “I’m waiting to pay my bill” as no one had told me they closed or given me my tab and it was 1 minute past midnight when they closed she then yelled at the bartender over my head something in Dutch and then stormed off to go tell the other customers in the bar they had to leave as well I guess.

There was still a party of 10+ people sitting in the restaurant but she made sure to come to me first and demand I leave immediately.

Very strange behavior and unlike anything I had seen in the Netherlands thus far. The bartender, a young man, apologized on her behalf and asked if everything was to my liking and if I needed anything else and was very kind and attentive. I paid my bill and headed out. Decent place for a night cap and snack - just make sure not to stay one minute...

This was/is a lovely pub with excellent event nights for live jazz and sports nights but do not expect to get any service any time soon. Service is non existent anymore even when reminding someone very politely. They just don’t show up after your order. It wasn’t busy at all and tables got mixed up, bills got mixed up, we were not alone. The food is fine but the portions are tiny and lack greens so we ordered this as sides as we knew this would be lacking. So all in all: lovely pub, service is friendly but you won’t see them and you have to go get your drinks at the bar as they won’t come after you’ve ordered (food also takes very long) or the wrong order arrives an hour later. Price point is also gone a bit off for what you get unfortunately. Still have a soft spot for this location but it’s not...

First night in Amsterdam, staying round the corner, and got in late. Spotted this place on the way. It was 9pm and the kitchen was due to close, but no problem, chef happy to go the extra mile, and cook. Well what a find. It is an excellent place. Really great vibe. Lovely service from the young folk. Very pleasant and courteous, and happy to serve the customer with a smile. Food was marvellous. I had beef burger and fries, son had the chicken burger and fries. Big bowl of crunchy fries. Burger was a handsome size, and very, very tasty. Pint of delicious draft beer to go with yhe meal, all for under €45. Very well worth checking out. We are here 5days. Hope to get back....
