During a recent European trip, I was on the hunt for a good schnitzel after journeying through Switzerland, France, and Germany. My search ended on a high note at Café Sonneveld in Amsterdam, and I couldn’t have been more pleased with the experience.
Nestled on a charming side street in a quieter neighborhood, this café offers a warm, welcoming atmosphere that feels worlds away from the busier, tourist-heavy areas of the city. It has a cozy, almost “hidden gem” vibe that made it feel like a favorite hangout for locals—a wonderful spot to relax and unwind after a day of exploring.
The food at Café Sonneveld was delicious, moderately priced, and comforting. Their menu features traditional Dutch fare, and the schnitzel I had was perfectly prepared, both crispy and flavorful. My wife and I enjoyed a delightful dinner here, with her also raving about her dish. The service was another highlight; the staff was incredibly friendly, attentive, and efficient, making sure we felt right at home.
One of the best aspects of this spot was how easy and seamless the entire experience was. The wait time was minimal, the atmosphere was relaxed, and everything felt thoughtfully put together.
If you’re visiting Amsterdam and looking for an authentic Dutch dining experience with great food, excellent service, and a cozy, local feel, I can’t recommend Café Sonneveld enough. It’s the kind of place that leaves a lasting impression and a...
Read moreabsolutely horrible experience. ordered the soup, 5 minutes later they said they were out. ordered the tartare, 15 minutes later they said it was out. ordered the mini meatballs, 15 minutes later they said it was out. i end up just ordering fries. the rest of my party and i waited over an hour a half for our food. we had to talk to them 3 times before we saw our food. they kept saying our food was on the way but we saw at least 5-7 tables get multiple plates of food. it would’ve been better and understandable if they were honest and said they didn’t put our order in instead of blaming the chef because “it was their first day.” the steak that ended up coming out was SO rare we had it send it back. and to top it off, as they’re taking the plates back, the waiter dropped a piece of toast with sauce on my friend’s pants. owner came to apologize and took off the drinks but ??? sorry that didn’t make me feel better. either take off the entire meal or leave us alone tbh. nothing is open now and all i’ve had was half a bowl of fries. would never recommend this place to anyone. oh and we had a reservation lol. they get one star because their garlic...
Read moremy friend and I went to this establishment after being unable to get a dinner reservation at La Perla (which is phenomenal) until 9:30 that night. As we were very hungry we sat down at around 7:15 and immediately gave the waitress our order. We received our bread after a few minutes but that would be the end of our positive experience. The couple next to us sat down, received their food, and left before we got our food and OVER AN HOUR later we had not gotten our items yet. Although around this time our server mentioned that the food would be out in two minutes we didn't get it for another 10 minutes. When it arrived it was inedible as my burger was burnt and yet somehow mushy and my friend's pasta could only be described as abysmal and "pukey tasting" we hastily paid ($45) without actually eating our dinner before going to the reservation we had made and THANKFULLY didn't cancel. 0/10 this place is to be avoided at all costs (would literally rather eat the bird poop that landed on my friend during this meal than return to...
