Wow - an amazing place for beer lovers. The beer menu is stretched across 1 and a half very large pages, with a huge selection of bottles and a surprisingly long list on tap - as well as 3 guest taps where the choices are painted on the walls! The menu is split into sections based on style, and there is a good amount of choice for all of them (including a number of alcohol free options). Serving sizes were decent for the price. The beers cover a lot of different dutch craft breweries, as well as beers from further afield - Germany, Belgium, UK, and USA to name a few from memory.
If you're not a beer lover, there is also a small selection of wines, soft drinks, hot drinks and cocktails.
As for food, the menu consists of burgers, ribs, sandwiches and more. They have some vegetarian options too. There is also of course plenty of traditional Dutch borrel snacks like bitterballen, fries, cheese sticks... We tried the beef burgers - incredibly delicious, and reasonably priced for dining out. I'd highly recommend the beef burger with onion, cheese, and butter sauce. Ridiculously decadent, best burger I've had in a while. The downside was the fries - a little overly thin and crispy. I think this is partly because of how busy they were right after opening, so I expect they will usually be better. The burgers made up for it.
The location: the bar is well connected, sitting right across the street from the oosterpark. A number of trams stop around the park. The one downside of the location is that it is of course beside a reasonably busy road with tram tracks, but given how popular the place appears to be, I would not recommend it for a quiet drink anyway!
The venue: Given current restrictions I can only comment on the terrace, which is very impressive. They have invested well in their terrace to make it a usable space even in the Dutch weather. It has heat lamps, wind shields and covering to keep the elements out and also block out some of the noise of the road. The terrace space is relatively large. The tables are all currently split with plastic dividers, to keep groups apart.
My only real complaint about the place was that they seemed a little unprepared for the crowds. It took some time to be served and one order of drinks got forgotten and had to be asked for a couple extra times before they arrived. The staff were at least very friendly, and the strange circumstances will surely make things difficult.
Overall, this is a really great bar and restaurant. I would highly recommend visiting if you love beer and want a lot of choices, and especially if you'd also like a burger to go along with your beers. The terrace space is really nice and fully prepared for bad weather. Almost certainly the best bar/terrace I have been to so far in Amsterdam. We...
Read moreI was in Amsterdam for 2-weeks doing a training at KIT. With only an hour lunch break, I was happy to find this sweet beer bar so close to my building. I was hoping to come by on a nice day, but sadly it was raining so I had to sit inside instead of on their beautiful patio. I came in on a Monday at noon and was seated immediately.
The reviews mentioned that their burgers were good, but I had been to The Butcher the night before so I wasn't really in the burger mood. Instead, I decided to go with a wildcard pick and get their beef burrito. As I waited for my food, I noticed that all the plates coming out were burgers. I started questioning my choice. I noticed a few other people who arrived after me get their food first and started to become really curious about the burrito.
This was a very different type of burrito for me. Interestingly, the burrito was toasted, topped with sesame seeds, and filled with meat and corn. It was served with sour cream, a red salsa, and piece of lettuce (wasn't sure how to use the piece of lettuce--so I wrapped it around the burrito like a spring roll). In fact, it did kind of taste like a spring roll to me. There was also a side of chips covered in some melted cheese and guacamole. The cheese had gotten hard on the chips because of the cool guac, so I'm not sure if that was the best choice. The meat was tender and flavorful
In retrospect, I probably should have ordered the burger. I think I'm giving 3 stars because I'm not sure if I would call this a burrito. It sort of felt like it was missing beans or chile relleno to have a more authentic Mexican flavor.
Overall, service was good and I acknowledge that maybe my standards for Mexican food after living in San Diego are a bit extreme. I wanted to come back and try their burger to boost this review but I never got a chance.
Too long? Solid beer list and nicely decorated beer garden.
Burgers seemed to be popular here, but I ordered a beef burrito, which was good but didn't really taste like a...
Read moreThe Beer was good but despite the reviews I felt the food lacking. I have to say that I am from NYC so perhaps I'm biased about my ribs and burgers so take that for what it's worth. The burger was on par with Shake Shack but with with a very fine grind of beef and a mayo based sauce that presented nothing special. I have no idea why the grind was so fine for the burger and I don't know why that is so prevalent here but the grind was so fine that the texture is off putting. The ribs were the standard Asian inspired sticky variety that seems to be the thing here and they too left much to be desired; I really don't get the BBQ here but maybe that's just me. The chicken was fresh but over done and dry and the side of mac n cheese was a case of trying to reinvent the wheel. It was like a fried egg roll with mac n cheese inside and a strangely overpowering dipping sauce, I did not like this at all. The sweet potato fries were very good and the onion rings were standard. The service was really good with an attentive wait staff and prompt service. If you're into local beer then by all means visit but if you want more than pedestrian bar level bites, local ingredients or...
