News Cafe — Restaurant in Groningen

My experiences at News Cafe are roughly the same as those of the other reviewers. Because it's so centrally located and friends keep asking me to meet them there, despite my warnings to the contrary, I've tried my luck a handful of times over the years, thinking perhaps things had changed since my last visit - only to be disappointed. I'd remark on the quality of service, but that would be difficult - seeing as I was never able to complete an order. Multiple visits, after waiting 20+ minutes, I've gone to the counter to place an order only to be told to wait for staff to come to my table. One would expect staff to be forthcoming after this, no? A 30+ minute wait for coffee plus rude treatment is truly unacceptable. But hey, like I said - central location means no need for proper service or treatment of customers. Oh, wait, I guess since I ended up leaving all 5+ visits before being able to order something, I'm not...

I went here as I came a few years ago as there was nowhere else open, and they did a good veggie burger. This visit I just thought I would see what else they had on the menu. The menu is very good and includes starters mains and desserts. Not just burgers either, I wanted a veggie burger when I came but had a vegetarian curry pie. It was very large and came with chips and a small side salad. It was very tasty. I had a blonde beer on tap and they also did Heineken and a couple of others on tap. The service was very good, friendly and helpful. There were a few vegetarian dishes so will worth trying if looking for a vege meal. Big bar too if you want to go just for drinks. Nice looking place, friendly staff and good service. I ordered the "carpaccio salad" thinking it would be a carpaccio and a side of salad, but instead it's carpaccio on top of a salad, you get truffle mayo on top of it but it's missing the fundimentals of a carpaccio and a salad, there is no red wine vinegar, lemon, salt or pepper on the carpaccio and no dressing on the salad, the meat is also low quality and more pink than red. When the dish came i noticed there was a fly in the salad, but when I told the waiter he was very friendly and helpful and provided quick service.
