What makes good food is and solid foundation in understanding culinary arts, what makes great food is the smaller details of cooking, what takes it farther is creativity that finds balance. All of which is found at Old Fashion.
(Arguably the best food I've had in the Netherlands so far.)
I am a Texan and I am a Chef, naturally and stereotypically I'm big on beef. With that said these burgers go further than being "great". Their patties are hand ground from selected cuts of beef (which is a detail many people over look, but it make a huge difference in the foundation of a great burgar). Add of the modern influence from other cuisines just takes thing to a new level. As an American Culinarian this is how a burgar should be and then somthing more. The fresh cut fries fried to a beautiful deep gold is a small detail that never fails to have my appreciation and the bread they start you with is not only wonderful but come with a spread that will prepare you for how wonderful you time will be.
Their dishes that require less of a hands-on approach show the same level of detail. I had mussels (which was a special with south east asian influences) and could not be happier with a such a balanced flavor that never took away from the mussels themselves. From the entrées to even the fries they've put alot of care in there work.
Finally I'm going to talk about the cocktails. As the name implies their Old Fashion cocktails are perfect, be with Bourbon or other spirits that is the first drink I judge any bartender on and will determine if I with have another cocktail or not; and they exceed my standards. Which lead me to their Ella Fitzgerald cocktail, a robust cocktail with more sours and a cocktail that stunned me. It is now my favorite cocktail and I will miss it dearly when I leave Europe.
Overall these place was an experience the food, staff, cocktail, atmosphere, and even the music selection just synergized so well that there is nothing negative I could say.
P.S I was in a party of 3 (which...
Read moreI wouldn't recommend this place. The food was nice, but the service needs to be educated. The waitress was nice, but needs to learn proper etiquette when it comes to men paying for dinner. I asked downstairs for the bill. Proper etiquette states that when the man asks for the bill in private. He wants to pay in private, e.g. without the females at the table knowing the bill. She said she'd bring the bill over as I went to the men's room downstairs. To my surprise, the waitress went upstairs and showed the bill to my female friends. I was shocked and appalled she did that. Call me old fashioned, but let men be men and let them pay how they want. Educate yourself on proper etiquette, if you're in the service industry. The waitress could have had a nice tip, but ended up with nothing. (which is ok in the Netherlands) - On another note, the first drink, an old fashioned I had was very different from the second. Be consistent in the quality of food and drinks you're selling. -Also I asked for a spicy mayo. The chefs weren't up to the task and gave me regular mayo and hot sauce and told me to do it myself. I had to pay double because they're not capable of mixing these sauces for me. I can't respect a chef that tells the guest to do...
Read moreGreat food, great service and dog friendly. The four of us had dinner at Old Fashion. We had our two dogs with us and were immediately given a place in a cozy corner. The food was super classy, like in a very expensive restaurant, but not remotely expensive in terms of price. The service from our waiter Jeroen was incredibly professional and friendly. He answered all questions about the menu incredibly warmly and spoke so enthusiastically about the dishes on offer as if they were works of art. And actually the food was too. An incredible experience, not only in terms of how they looked, but also in terms of taste. Thank you Jeroen for your recommendations, we have never experienced such a good, charming and talented waiter. If you open your own restaurant one day, we'll come visit! 🙂 The drinks, even the mocktails were really good too. In summary: a must if you want to eat super chic and super delicious cheap food in Den Haag. Far more...
