The Hague Social Club is an absolute must if you love wine. It houses over 40 red and 40 white wines, plus rosé, bubbles and dessert wines — all for you to taste, drink, and enjoy.

You’re given your own card which activates the wine cabinets, allowing you to pour yourself a small glass to taste, a medium one to enjoy, or a large to indulge. It’s a lovely way to explore new wines without having to commit to a full glass.

We were served by Rudger, whose service was impeccable. He was patient, knowledgeable and took the time to explain and recommend wines based on our preferences and what we were eating. His attention to detail really added to the experience.

The food is made up of small bites to complement the wines. We tried the meatballs, croquettes and fried cauliflower — all of which were delicious and paired perfectly with our selections.

Brilliant place. You can sample your own wine from a huge selection of wines on tap. And the selection is amazing! The food is delicious too, with plenty of vegetarian options. We tried the crispy cauliflower, the artichoke with creamy spinach dip, the asparagus with Parmesan cheese and the house bread with aioli and noise butter. All were divine! As a non-vegetarian starter we had half a dozen of oysters, on Sundays it’s 1.5 euros per oyster, it’s a great deal! The Hague Social Club, is een wijnbar én restaurant in het hart van het Zeeheldenkwartier, gevestigd in een sfeervol pand met een rijke historie. De locatie aan de Prins Hendrikstraat is bijzonder: ooit drukkerij, nu omgetoverd tot een moderne hotspot met behoud van karakter, zoals het atrium met balkon dat nog altijd indruk maakt.

Wat direct opvalt, is het zelftapsysteem voor wijn. Met meer dan 100 wijnen op tap kun je naar hartenlust proeven: van een klein slokje tot een vol glas. Een leuke manier om zelf op ontdekkingstocht te gaan of je te laten adviseren door het kundige personeel, dat goed meedenkt in het combineren van wijn en gerecht.

Op het terras werd genoten van een glas Spaans wit bij zowel Zeeuwse als Franse oesters – een frisse en ontspannen start. Favorieten op tafel waren onder meer de gefrituurde bloemkool, steak tartaar en de artisjok met rijke kruidenkaas. Een verrassende match werd gevonden in de Vongole & Cockles met een Old Vine Chenin Blanc van Bellingham – een combinatie die perfect in balans bleek.

Ook de Ibericowang met appel, eendenlever op brioche en PX-sherrysaus was het vermelden waard: een rijk en gelaagd gerecht met veel smaak. De frietjes erbij waren klassiek goed. Niet elke wijnkeuze was een schot in de roos – het halve glas Meursault maakte minder indruk dan gehoopt, terwijl de Pouilly-Fuissé juist positief verraste.

Afsluiten gebeurde in stijl met een selectie kazen, goed desembrood en nog wat laatste proefglaasjes. Een klein shotje van de Opus One, een iconische Napa Valley Bordeaux blend, werd als uitsmijter geproefd.
