A happy surprise in unfamiliar lands. One of the best Thai restaurants I’ve had outside of Southeast Asia and a good chance, the best Thai restaurant in Utrecht. A solid “B+”or 4 stars location agnostic, but belled to 5 stars for the location. Definitely worth an effort to try out.
After being in Europe for over a week, it was time for some Asian. A Google search, and the pictures from “The Thai” caught my eye. With a 4.8 star rating and one Thai reviewer (based on last name) saying the food “tastes just like home,” I was sold.
Suan, the owner and chef originally from Burma, learned by fire (pun intended) working in Thai restaurants in Southeast Asia and in Europe. The restaurant opened March 2025 and even though I haven’t tried others, based on my experience of Thai restaurants throughout multiple non-Asian cities, I’m willing to bet it’s one of the best (if not the best) Thai restaurant in Utrecht.
The decor is simple, modern and clean. The open kitchen, an important element of the decor, allows patrons to watch Suan practice his craft of wrestling fire breathing woks. I’m particularly jealous of the range vents, so much heat, so much stir frying, and yet the restaurant is not unbreathably smoky.
Green curry chicken (B+) : in terms of flavor and viscosity, the curry sauce is spot on. It’s truly reflective of curries I’ve had in Thailand. Savory, a touch of sweetness, and the rich aromas of a well balanced curry. The green beans and the cucumbers provided a nice crunch. It’s too bad the chicken has to be pre-cooked first to speed the timing ito plate the dish. Regardless, still a very good representation of what you would get if you were in Thailand.
Stir fried mixed vegetables (B) : a great side dish to go with rice and proteins! Broccoli, carrots, bean, sprouts, green beans, all mixed together in a nice savory sauce.
Holy basil beef with fried eggs (B+) : so many Thai restaurants go too light on the basil, but not here. Another very well-made sauce with the fresh aroma of basil encapsulating the ingredients, with crunchy, red peppers and onions bringing a sweet balance. The beef brought great flavors, but was a little chewy. The crunchy eggs were wonderful with rice, despite being a touch overcooked to my liking. Overall, good enough to bring back happy memories of Thailand.
Fried banana (B+) : served nice and hot and very crunchy! Although quite full, I definitely would have wolf down another. I think a higher banana to better ratio would have improved the dish, and although not “Thai” at all, a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream would have made it heavenly.

I recently had dinner at The Thai Utrecht, and overall, it was a flavorful and satisfying experience. The restaurant has a cozy, welcoming vibe, making it a great place to sit down and enjoy authentic Thai cuisine.
I ordered a variety of dishes to get a good sense of their menu. The Green Curry stood out immediately — rich, aromatic, and perfectly spiced. It had a great balance of creamy coconut milk and bold Thai herbs, with tender shrimp and fresh vegetables his is a must-try
The Tom Kha soup was another highlight. The broth was silky and fragrant with lemongrass and galangal, offering a comforting and slightly tangy flavor that paired beautifully with the creamy coconut base.
The chicken wings were good simple but well done. I also enjoyed the spring rolls
The sweet and sour stir-fried shrimp compared to the other dishes. It’s a solid good it was exactly as the name sweet and sour I truly enjoyed that with fried rice . It was just damm good .
Service was polite and efficient.
