El Castillo — Restaurant in Valkenburg aan de Geul

I love Mexican food. This is like religion to me. I’ve lived in Los Angeles for many years and spent a lot of time in Mexico, so… I’m like a high priest of Mexican food. No Im not kidding. This place wasn’t bad, if you don’t call it Mexican food. The folks here are nice, and the service was great, but the food was confusing. I went with the buffet (they push it), I wouldn’t do that again. If I were to give this place another shot, I’d order something from the menu instead. I’m trying to find a way to describe this place without sounding too negative because, honestly, it wasn’t bad… it just wasn’t authentic, traditional, or particularly good. There’s a European flair thrown into the mix, probably to be expected. Follow me here- It’s like ordering a pizza in Lithuania, and finding they put pickles on top. No clue why. If they could control themselves on the pickles, you’d have a great pizza—but they can’t. If you’re at a local place in Lithuania, you’re getting pickles on your pizza. This Mexican food is similarly altered. They miss most flavor profiles in my opinion. That said, they did have a chili verde that almost saved the buffet - But the “guacamole” at the salad bar? That’s a tough sell. They might make it fresh, but if so, they’ve figured out a way to make it taste like it was squeezed out of a bag. I didn’t really want to go there with this review, but this place feels a bit like Campbell Soup opening a Mexican restaurant and doing the best they can with whatever ingredients they have in the fridge. Another thing - Mexican food and pinto beans, or what we call refried beans, are inseparable. A Mexican restaurant without them is like opening a Dutch restaurant in Mexico without cheese. If you’ve got a Mexican restaurant without beans, well… you don’t got beans. This place seems to put a ton of effort into things most people wouldn’t consider Mexican food and definitely didn’t go there for. It’s more of an international buffet, and if that’s what they’re going for, cool, good job. But everything about the ambience and the restaurant says “I’m trying to make Mexican food”. SO some unsolicited advice from someone you don’t know or care about: focus on the basics—refried beans, rice, chicken fajitas, steak fajitas, freshly made guac, a salsa bar (yours is close), a pan of cheese enchiladas, and some tamales. You nailed the chili verde, so props for that. After that, add a couple of stacks of fresh flour and corn tortillas, seasoned rice, and you can literally eliminate almost everything else on your buffet bar. Or I should say - do whatever you want after that. But if you’re missing those points, just call it something else that’s all. Keep the chips for the nachos. You get my point—I think you’re spending a ton of money and time on a bunch of things that are not relatable and people likely don’t care about. My son and I came in for dinner, tried a few things, and decided we wanted to eat somewhere else. We were happy to pay and leave a tip—the service was great—but the food just didn’t hit the mark for us. Review of a food critic.

FOOD POISONING WARNING.

Today we choose to try el castillo, where shall we start.

The restaurant looks great, nice tables, bright colors, the amazing animals, but this does not save them from a bad review.

The buffet is very limited in choice, most food is not even mexican and the mexican food they have is not real mexican food and just very old and stale due to being in the heaters of the buffet.

The pulled beef caserol was just awful, when i looked around i saw this dish going for the trash on many peoples plates as it was that bad.

The service was mediocre, they are very nice, but they stand around in groups chilling because there is barely any work, the plate pick up service was on the slow side, mistakes where made with the drinks as well.

Aside from all this the worst part is the food poisoning we got from this trip, we had to rush home as the illness kicked in really fast, if you want to be on the toilet for the next few days and loose some weight through that, well this is the way to go.

Due to the poisoning i give them 1 star, as i cant go lower at first i wanted to give them 2 stars but the endless toilet visits force my hand to give then 1 star but i would rather give then 0 stars if google let me and put a banner on the wall stating poison food inside, the is a serious...

Ik heb door mijn laatste bezoek een beetje een haat/liefde verhouding met deze tent gekregen... (3 weken geleden, heb er lang over getwijfeld of ik deze review moest schrijven maar het zit me simpelweg nog steeds dwars hoe het allemaal ging..).

Het eten en drinken is ge-wel-dig, daar kan ik alleen maar goede dingen over zeggen. Verder is het interieur prachtig. Je hebt meteen het gevoel alsof je in Mexico bent als je binnen loopt. Zeker achterin de zaak (waar ze een soort binnentuin hebben gemaakt) is het ontzettend mooi en sfeervol aangekleed.

MAAR....... er is helaas absoluut geen sprake (meer) van Mexicaanse gastvrijheid. Heel erg jammer.

Nadat we netjes (weken!) van tevoren gereserveerd hadden, kregen we te horen dat ze onze reservering verkeerd hadden overgenomen en per abuis een dag eerder hadden gezet. Dus er was ineens geen plek(!). Hierdoor werden we (nadat het personeel wat drukkende, gëirriteerde blikken en opmerkingen had uitgewisseld) op een echt ontzettende drukke plek midden in de loop van het restaurant tussen grote groepen mensen neergezet. En dat terwijl we bij onze reservering juist om een rustige plek hadden gevraagd.

We hebben toen zelf maar aangegeven dat we het niet prettig vonden en gevraagd of we ergens anders mochten zitten. En dit kon wel, maar het was wel allemaal een beetje héél moeilijk en het personeel keek er vooral héél vrolijk en begripvol bij. Ze liepen een hoop te zwammen over grote groepen mensen die nog zouden komen, het was druk en zooo lastig.... uiteindelijk mochten we toch helemaal achterin gaan zitten waar er zeker 4 vrije tafels waren en waar tot 22:00 uur, toen we vertrokken, -geen hond- meer is gaan zitten. Dus hele groepen zijn niet op komen dagen? Of het lag ergens anders aan....? Ook links en rechts van de ingang, de voorkant van het restaurant, was het de hele avond leeg of amper bezet. Waar de opgefokte reactie vandaan kwam die wij kregen, snap ik dus echt he-le-maal niet.

We moesten verder constant zelf vragen of we nog iets te drinken konden bestellen. Het personeel liep er echt een beetje rond als een stel politieagenten (1 ober in het bijzonder, zeer onsympathiek figuur). En weinig gevoel voor mensen. "Het zit op z'n plek en dan loop je weg".

El Castillo zou er goed aan doen om dit eens opnieuw te bekijken. Een paar jaar geleden (zelfs middenin een corona lockdown!) was het ontzettend gezellig en werden we super vriendelijk en gastvrij ontvangen. Toen kon het wel...met overal 1,5 meter afstand tussen.
