We were a big group and as we arrived and asked about food we were handed a small menu in Dutch. We asked about separate bills, and while the waitres wasn't keen, she intimidated that it would be possible. There was no indication on the menu that this was a three course menu, and most of us didn't want three courses. We ordered from this and was surprised when the first course arrived - sharing platters of ham, chips, smoked salmon etc We sent these back at first as we didn't expect them!! Then we had our mains. Nobody had the dessert - again we didn't want it as we were pressed for time. Then we were told we couldn't pay separate bills, which became a problem as some people had been drinking, others had paid for drinks as they went along, others had drunk nothing. I appreciate this was a particular problem related to our group not speaking Dutch and not understanding the menu was a three course special - but we were given no other menus to order from . The food was okay, the beer was good. The service was fine, the servers were generally polite but we found the attitude to the group changed when we requested the separate bills and were refused. If you are in a group I would avoid this place. We went in a loosely affiliated group of 20 and they refused to itemize our bills so that we could split them equitably as some people paid for drinks as they went and others did not. They also disguised the fact that what we were ordering was a 3 course meal because the menu only showed main courses. So they brought out a bunch of "sharing platters" that no-one knew was arriving. The Old Pal really does welcome you like an old pal. It has a nice cozy pub feel to it, with ambient lighting and wooden details. We walked in with 4 of us without a reservation on a Sunday night and this was not a problem. The foods here surprised us in its quality. It is standard pub fare, but certainly done well.
