Absolutely disappointed. Rude staff and substandard food.

I live just around the corner in Kohimarama I’ve had this place recommended to me several times. I walked past it with the dog after our walk on the beach and thought, ‘why not?’

I walked in leaving the dog outside and asked if it was too early to have dinner (6pm) and was there a table available. To be told rudely ‘no dogs you have to eat outside if you want to eat here.’ - I thought that this was obvious as this is the case in most restaurants, which is why I left her outside. I declined to comment on the fact that an older patron sat by the bar had a little fluffy lapdog on her knee.

I took a table outside and waited a good 10 minutes for a menu. Then had to ask two different waitresses to order. There were 2 waitresses and a bar tender all were young ladies appearing to be in their late teens and early 20’s. I’m unsure why they were so nonchalant and dismissive as there were only 3 other tables there and they didn’t appear to be busy and were spending most of there time milling around and chatting between themselves by the bar.

I ordered the porterhouse and chips and mushroom sauce on the side as was feeling like treating myself. The food took around 15 minutes which was sooner than I expected. The steak itself was well seasoned and was a perfect medium rare and was a good temperature. Unfortunately it was absolutely tiny. The chips were cold and tasted like the oil hadn’t been changed since Monday, were heavily salted and were also a very small portion. The accompanying mushroom sauce which took up the majority of the plate was cold, but tasted quite nice. The salad was 2 cherry tomatoes on a bed of salad leaves. It was a very thin bed….. However, the vinaigrette which accompanied the salad was delicious.

I was disappointed by this meal. But I probably wouldn’t have written this review if the service wasn’t so bad. I’ve had worse food at many other places in my life but I normally give them a second chance and go back and try something else on the menu.

I won’t be returning to Der Metz. Maybe the chef was having an off day, that is absolutely understandable. But being spoken to so rudely by the staff is...

9 of us dined here today for lunch. On a Saturday. There was our table, and 3 other large groups there.

The young waitress promptly took orders for drinks and food. She is AMAZING! She was waiting on all 4 of our groups basically on her own, and doing an incredible job at remembering orders, and ensuring all our needs were being met. She was also doing all the drinks. She was obviously under extreme pressure, but she was super friendly and happy to spend the time to wait for those of our table who just couldnt decide what from the menu to order.

The food took almost an hour to arrive, but the waitress took the time to apologise to us for the wait, and explained that the largest table of diners (20 pax) were unexpected, and they were down one staff member. We were happy drinking and appreciated the clear and friendly communication. She let us know when the food was 5 minutes away.

The meals came... and they were HUGE. There were smiles all around the table, and some slightly panicked faces as people realized 1 schnitzel was probably all they needed, but we'd all ordered 2 each. At the end of the meal - everyone agreed it was delicious.

These are big hearty meals, with great German beers and a range of wines, schnapps, and the usual's all available.

We're a family with Germans in it. These meals are on par - and in the case of the Schnitzels, larger than any meal we've had in Germany.

If you want hearty food and...

We decided to book a table for 9 at this restaurant to celebrate a weeding anniversary. Noticed we visited this place back in the summer and even though the meals were okay the service was terrible, specially the time it took for the food to be served. Nevertheless we decided to try again. Our experience this time was horrible !! The place was relatively full and there were only two poor waitresses running around struggling to cope with customers demands ! When we finally managed to talk to one of them to order our food, we never expected what was coming, it took one hour and 15 minutes for the plates to be served ! We asked one the waitress a couple times was was wrong to non proper explanation, apart from saying they were short of staff (not very professional or what you want to hear) And to make this even more terrible, for some sort of terrible mistake they forgot to cooked one dish ! It got totally mistaken and finally served another 30 minutes later .. I normally would have a second thought regarding a review, however this time I found what happened here unacceptable and totally unprofessional, obviously whoever owns this restaurant is making a lot of money so why not hiring more staff ? I will live this to your imagination. Overall terrible, food was just okay , horrible experience I would not recommend this...
