The food was good, but the waiter (older female) was very poor. We had a quiet chuckle when she accientally wrote down and read out my drink as tomato sauce not tomato juice, but the specials were described inaccurately. The fried fish was supposedly served with potato mash and green beans - we ordered two but they were on a rosti with chopped pineapple salad. We turned down the option of 1/2kg of braised mushrooms, only to see on the board on the way out it was actually mussels. That would've been easier to manage! The fish of the day was also described accurately on the blackboard menu, but it was on the floor leaning against a table and facing towards the outside tables so we could not read it ourselves. The burger was nice, fish not what we ordered but tasty nonetheless, and I would've gone for the mussels if I had...

Arriving at our hotel, we were informed their restaurant was closed and recommended we head to Speights Ale House instead. Being from Dunedin, I wasn't thrilled at the idea, as Dunedin's Alehouse is ok but not great. I was very happy to discover however that the Timaru Alehouse is quite different - cosy, with fresh decor, not too noisy, and cheerful, efficient service from the waitresses. Thank you to them. I love burgers, and have twice travelled to Wellington just for Burger Welly, so suffice to say, I have eaten a lot of burgers. The Alehouse beef burger at was one of the best I've eaten. The patty was tasty, seasoned, moist, juicy - perfectly cooked. Melted cheese, bacon jam, iceberg lettuce, onion rings - it all went together like magic. Excellent fries too. Made with love, huge compliments...

Most uncomfortable experiences of my life . Never thought I'd want to cry out of frustration, I got there at 17:00 went to order and the waitress said to go to the bar to order the food and drinks so my sister and I did after ordering and paying , taking a seat we where then told by the same waitress "oh sorry , this tables booked from 6 " so I said all good , is there some where else we could sit she then said "no we fully booked " i was surprised as she was the one that was there when we ordered but no one informed us... it was unprofessional and to feel so rushed waiting for the food and then having to scarf down my meal was honestly horrible. I wouldnt recommend this place or atleast not to go on a Saturday . But I must say not all the staff was as bad as our server , but the...

Ordered takeaway while in Timaru for work. I asked if the apple crumble could come with the ice cream separate and was told it comes in a cup for take out. But when I got back to my motel, I saw that it had been put straight on top (would not have ordered if they said that). Thought it might still taste okay, but it was bland and tasteless. No idea why the apple was red or where the crumble was! The fries were blah, the burger bun was burnt and the chicken was dry. According to the menu, there should have been cheese and smoked aioli in the burger, but all I could see and taste was a tangy sauce on the coleslaw. Very friendly service, but horrible food. Won’t ever go back.

Good place to spend some time drinking great local beer. Food is ok too if you are not too picky. I think fries should not come already salted (oversalted, in my opinion) and salt and pepper should be on each table. Got some lamb shoulder with grilled veges and mash. Meat amount was about 200 grams out of that 50 grams was not meat. That should be trimmed before cooking. Usually hard to notice but when the meal arived at table was already cold. I was keen to give this feed back in house but nobody came to ask how is our meal. Aged ribeye was good not sure if that topping sauce was a good choice for a prime piece.
