NOT TYPICAL CAFE & RESTAURANT — Restaurant in Christchurch

I visited this place with a group of friends for weekend brunch about a month ago, and unfortunately, it turned out to be one of the worst dining experiences I’ve ever had.

The environment was pleasant, but the service and food left much to be desired. About 10–15 minutes after placing our orders, I was informed that my chosen dish was no longer available. While I had no issue reordering, we waited for over an hour to receive our meals.

When the food finally arrived (they was another group who ordered before us and still hadn’t receive their food), I was served a mushroom dish that was truly awful. The sauce was sour and flavorless, the mushrooms were chewy, and the bread underneath was completely soggy. It was so unappetizing that, for the first time ever, I returned a dish. To their credit, the waiter immediately offered a refund, but I declined a replacement.

My friends’ meals weren’t much better—while slightly more edible than mine, they were still disappointing. Overall, the long wait, poor food quality, and underwhelming experience made this a place I...

I had a chai latte, but I’ve never had coffee like this before—it was awful. When I came back home, I made a capsule coffee instead, and that was much better. Hopefully, the other coffee options are okay. My daughter ordered hot chips. The café wasn’t busy, but it still took a long time for them to come out. This Sumner cafe is a hidden gem! The views are incredible – seriously breathtaking hills as your backdrop if you snag an outdoor seat. They're super pet-friendly, even giving our little poodle a free treat! The food was amazing and such a great price for the location.
