Before dining at Amigos today, I read many reviews about it that were all great and it got me thinking as to why they were all great and no bad ones at all as we are all human and do make mistakes every now and then. So, today I got my answer. There are so many great reviews because it is great! From the moment we arrived at the door we felt looked after and welcomed by the staff and the smells coming from the open kitchen were fantastico! The atmosphere was fun, vibrant and ecelctic and the volume of music just right. The menu is extensive with all meat options as well as plenty of vegetarian ones too. Serving sizes are very generous and the combinations of flavours exciting. Everything tasted great and the tortilla chips they make are very more-ish! I give an A+ for food and flavour. The service was very good too with friendly, accommodating staff and only a short wait between ordering and receiving our meals.
Best virgin mojito I've ever had!
As a first time introduction to the world of Mexican food (beyond El Paso tacos off the supermarket shelf) for myself and my friend, we couldn't be more impressed and we are already discussing future visits with our friends and families.
Side notes • Taco Tuesdays only $5 each! • Colouring activities for kids • Sombreros...
Read moreThe staff was very friendly and nice, the presentation was great, and the side of crisps that came with the main dish of ribs (costillas) was really good. However, the ribs and rice I ordered weren't.
The 35NZD ribs were pale, tough, dry, and left much to be desired. Its top was completely drenched in BBQ sauce, which, although it tasted good, left the underpiece completely devoid of everything.
The 7NZD rice did not disclose on the menu that it would be covered in salsa, which I also found rather unpleasant. It mostly tasted like raw onions, which completely overtook the neutrality of the rice that I planned to eat with the ribs when I ordered it.
Staff did offer to bring me a new rib portion since I couldn't finish it, but I refused as I felt far too disheartened to continue. Maybe I was just unlucky; however, that doesn't excuse what I was served at the whopping total of 42NZD.
I did not order a drink; my friends did, and their orders went above 45NZD.

Read moreI visited Amigos in Dunedin and that was FAR better. Invercargill Amigos is rude & food is lacking flavor.
I ordered a beef burrito and chips & guacamole for take away. The burrito had sour cream and salsa on top so I asked for utensils. (Dunedin put everything on the side.) The host told me they didn't have any cutlery to-go. I asked him how I should eat the meal w/o a fork & knife. His response was, "that's how it comes." I left & told him he was frustrating.
Upon messily eating the burrito I found there to be more rice than anything. I put some extra salsa on....eh.....it was tomato sauce not salsa.(Dunedin's salsa was awesome!) I thought I'd try the guacamole - it's summer avocados are in season. Nope. Unfortunately, this location serves flavourless, stringy, desperately needing flavor guacamole.
It was truly a sad experience and very disappointing. I won't be back to this location. Also, It'd be nice if their staff acted like they...
