Tuatara Cafe / Bar — Restaurant in Invercargill City

Beautiful set up, love the feel of the place, but the AI art slideshow was a bit disappointing and gave an 'uncanny valley' vibe. We also had a poor experience for breakfast. We came in at 7:15AM on 24/03/25 for coffee and cabinet food, and the gentleman behind the bar very clearly ignored us until we had to call out quite loudly (he was directly across the counter from us with his back turned). Perhaps he's hard of hearing, so I try not to judge that. He also made an audible sigh when we ordered coffee like it was an inconvenience. The coffees he made were also not drinkable. A butterscotch flat white was so sweet none of us could drink it (and two of us have sweet tooths), and an iced coffee tasted like it had cleaner in it. Good food but not clean ,there were no cleared tables when we ordered so we sat with no table till they cleared them then waited for them to wipe them down but they didn't ,1 table had salt all over it and another had food on it so we changed table with a reserved clean table before we got our food and even that didn't look very clean with wipe marks all over the glass table top and being busy is not an excuse because we watched them doing nothing and yarning when they should of been cleaning, we even seen people walk in and walk straight back out as they couldn't find...

The Tuatara Cafe has great coffee and it's in a central location with handy street parking options for a quick bite, (or the library carpark is only a few doors down - the top level is free for 2 hours).

It's one of the best places to brunch & lunch in Invercargill, if you're after quality casual dining, that has a decent range of options for Vegetarians.
