Fat Bastard Pies — Restaurant in Invercargill City

The pastry was the best part. A bit on the salty side for my liking, but it was cooked to perfection. I had steak and mushroom. There was a herb used, I'm not 100% on my identification - I think it was Thyme. The overall flavour was too heavy, very earthy. I expect it to be earthy, but this was over the top, the Thyme dominated. I couldn't 'taste' the mushroom because the flavours weren't balanced. There was very little gravy and it was very punchy. The beef-: could have been amazing but it was so dry and over cooked that it got stuck in my throat. The beef fibres were very tight. To their credit there was no gristle- this was awesome. New Zealanders', we love our pies and we are probably some of the worlds biggest critics. What's needed: Less cooking time- allow for reheating and put that on the bag! Pretty good! Wish they had a second vegetarian option. The only veg pie wasn't available today anyway (or my second choice either), so I ended up going with a mutton pie instead. For my personal taste, it was too heavy and dense - but I imagine those who eat more meat than I do might enjoy that quantity!

I wouldn't dock a star for that alone, since it's a matter of preference, but was a bit disappointed overall. In addition to not having the only veggie pie in stock, they "weren't making large coffees today" (not sure why). So basically I ended up with a third-choice pie and second-choice coffee. Not bad, just a bit of a letdown after fantasies of a Thai curry pie with a nice big coffee, you know?

Mr mince and BIG cheese 9.1/10 Ratio between mince and cheese is so good. Mince has a strong beef taste, non of that imitation gelatin crap bakeries use. So good.

The big nude seafood 9.5/10 This was my favourite. Decent chunks of mussel, scallop, not like mushed up when they made it. Excellent chowder wrapped up in awesome pastry.

Lucifer's pepper steak 8.7/10 Strong pepper taste. Alsp the steak peices are so tender, dark gravy compliments it so well. Hearty pie and must try if you love pepper.
