Really enjoyed Ohui. The food was fantastic and our server Sarah was just the loveliest ever and so attentive.
I've seen a couple of posts about table size. We were at a cafe style table near the window and while it was a little awkward settling in once we just moved ourselves around a bit we were all snug and nice.
I had the paua tortellini and bite size char sui pork belly bites. Both delicious. I think is order a double portion of the paua tortellini just because I was so in love with the flavours and the sauce was so good I got a spoon to finish it up (I asked for bread but they didn't have it - I have no shame and will not waste good sauce).
The mans had the steak and was very very happy with it - he nicked some of my pork belly bites naughty bugger and clearly liked those.
Recommend the brown butter cake!
We didn't have the cocktails at $26 we felt they were a little pricey. But might do next time as the pumpkin spice cocktail looked like a thing to behold. Alternatively they have a lovely rose wine at a very reasonable price.
It was easy to get too and we can across from Ōtahuhu to go, nice vibes, other restaurant goers also seemed to be having a lovely time, great staff (another shout out to the lovely Sarah).
Will be back as I want to try the Kingfish crudo next.
Some photos are me realising I wanted to take photos but got excited and dug in first haha.
Thanks for a lovely Valentine's Day...
Read moreWe finally visited a restaurant that had been on our minds for a long time! A Japanese chef once told us, “A famous NZ chef is involved with this place,” which made us even more interested.
Every time we saw it on Facebook or Instagram, we thought, “We really want to go there someday.”
We ordered an apple cocktail and a beer. We felt like it took a while for the first drink to arrive, but the cocktail was beautifully presented, almost like latte art, with a heart design—very stylish. The taste was a bit on the sour side.
The pork ribs were unbelievably tender! We’ve had pork ribs in many places, but it was the first time we experienced ribs where the meat came off effortlessly with just a knife. The apple kimchi on the side served as a refreshing palate cleanser.
The kingfish crudo was served with small ponzu pearls and yuzu kosho. For Japanese people, kingfish with ponzu and yuzu kosho is an unbeatable combination. The yuzu kosho paste blended so well with the plate that we almost didn’t notice it. We’re not sure if it paired well with the rice crackers, but it was a tasty appetizer nonetheless.
We had the scotch fillet—it was thick, tender, and delicious!
The pan-fried fish was served on top of organic soba noodles in a fish broth. The soup had a gentle fish flavor, and the fish itself was fluffy with a firm texture. We think the skin was crispy. It was quite a large portion, making it very satisfying. The soba noodles were white and thin, almost like rice noodles. They didn’t have the aroma of buckwheat, so it was different from sarashina soba and quite distinct from Japanese soba. The light fish broth, the mild noodles, and the thick fish combined to create a unique but delicious dish.
If you’re not a fan of coriander, we’d recommend asking to have it removed.
The mashed potatoes were the truffle mashed potatoes we’d seen on Instagram. They were incredibly rich and absolutely delicious!
The dessert didn’t seem to have a name listed on the official website yet. It consisted of a cake and ice cream on top of cinnamon cream. If you love cinnamon, you’ve got to try it! The coffee-flavored ice cream was also delicious.
Since having a full meal there can be quite pricey, we don’t think we’ll go often, but we’d love to visit again. There are side dishes too, so it might be a nice spot to just drop by for a drink.
The restaurant always looks lively from the outside, filled with many customers, making it a popular local spot. Larger groups were seated at the back, so it seems there are big tables there. The staff were preparing drinks at the bar and serving them themselves, which seemed pretty tough—but they all had smiles on their faces. Thank you for the great service!
We’ve only browsed the menu before, but this time we noticed it had slightly changed (the curry was no longer there😭).
Since it’s a newly opened restaurant, we believe they’ll come up with even more delicious dishes in the future. We’re looking forward to it!
Kingfish crudoに小さな粒のポン酢と柚子胡椒。ヒラマサにポン酢と柚子胡椒は最高です。ライスクラッカーとの組み合わせは合うのかな?よくわからないけど、美味しいおつまみでした。
Scotch filletはパートナーが食べていましたが、肉厚で柔らかくて美味しかった。

Read moreIt’s great to have this restaurant reopen - we’ve been after a good local option for some time.
Food was fresh and perfectly prepared - silky pasta, fish that tasted like it was caught an hour prior, slow cooked meat falling off the bone, beautiful and precise plating - but could have done with more of a flavour punch. None of the dishes (except maybe the creamed rice dessert) were particularly memorable due to the flavours being on the bland side. With minor tweaks to lift this, given the quality of all other elements, this restaurant would be remarkable.
Cocktails were unique and enjoyable.
Service was a little slow - lots of waitstaff in the area or walking past but needing to be flagged down rather than checking in when drinks were empty. It wasn’t clear that waitstaff were assigned to certain areas or tables so no real ownership over ensuring we were happy and well served.
The restaurant has a beautiful ambiance. The only let down is the size of the tables, which are on the small side making it hard to juggle plates and glasses.
We’ll definitely be back to give this place another crack once they’ve had a bit more time to settle in. This place has the potential to be an incredible spot with a few tweaks on what...
